What part do you find enigmatic? Storing energy in spring has the potential to be lighter than storing it in a flywheel. And once in the the spring, it stays there and isn't lost to parasitic drag as it is in a flywheel. A CVT is needed so as to adjust the rate at which energy is put into and taken out of the spring. For example, to brake lightly, you wind up the spring slowly. To brake harder, you wind up the spring faster.

ya it demonstrates kinetic recovery but not much power is achieved. only half a bike wit no rider and it didnt travel very far. most effort put in the design of cvt i feel.

This will not move the bike suddenly and give a sudden jerk to you.

what about the sudden jerk applied by the flywheel in rear sprocket ???

there is slip in the clutch to avoid this. cork on steel, so not as sudden jerk

no cvt was used, i would recommoned using one, but due to budget/ time concers , it was avoided. the precentage of slip was dependent on the force applyed on the clutch. the clutch force was controled by the braking system on the handle bars the harder the lever was pressed the less or no slip .

I think the bicycle frame created has a lot of potential. The "Mixte" frame looks quite strong and could be used for touring.

I remember reading about one way back in the 60's.It used a piston in the bottom bracket to pressurize air inside the hollow frame tubes. A lever reversed valving to use the compressed air to drive the piston the other way.

I think that I read it in the April issue of some magazine.

I can also imagine it evolving into a bike people would like to own, perhaps; a 5kg flywheel plus drivetrain and fittings is still a significant amount of weight, but there are plenty of people who willfully ride 38kg bikes everyday.

Of course, most of those heavy bikes are comfort oriented and fully kitted-out, so maybe rendering your flywheel in a Dutch style fabbed in Alu would be the target.

Anyway, keep at it guys, and keep us up-to-date!
What in the world are these bikes made of, and what features do they come with to weigh 38kg?

hell, some tours get by with less...

you can see the pictures above. The clutch is made of cork. This thread has some hints if you actually read it. It's a thread from 2012, so I doubt the students that made that design are still around.
