Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

The Specialized hub that came on my Roubaix is almost silent, the Ksyrium Elite hum is pretty ratchety.

Why are some louder than others? It may be that changing teeth profile/springs to be quieter = less reliable, through softer materials or design. Also if hubs are very lightweight there is probably less material between it the pawls and outside air. Sound dampening measures can add weight too.

But i've learned to consider it a HTFU alarm too

My Easton EC90's are decently loud. I'm more annoyed by it than anything.

My Reynolds (Alta Race) hubs are pretty noisy. I should make a short recording and post it.

Since we're on the topic, when I see a zip-tie around a hub, does that limit the sound but limiting vibration? All the bling bling carbon race wheels with them zip ties are silent.

As noted, an HTFU alert. Also useful for getting people's attention when you want to.

Put on some Hadley downhill mountain bike hubs.
They're like angry, hateful Chris Kings.
Guaranteed to cause a stir.

Both work, the ramp/pawl kind is the noisy kind. The pawls are spring loaded, so they click as they go over the ramps when you stop pedaling.

loudness of chris kings has become a running joke, and i like loud hubs

if you want something quiet, get shimano hubs (which are usually heavier, some of which goes to dampen the sound or something)

Everyone said Campy Neutron free hubs were noisy. When I first rode my Neutrons, I thought something was broken it was so dead quiet!

I assume Campy made the Neutron hubs quieter after complaints?

???

I've never seen that. But I can't imagine how a ziptie around the outside of the hub would quiet the pawl sound coming from the inside.

I like the noise from my 2003 vintage Eurus wheels. The newer Record hubs are quieter.

Holy cow. I need to stop riding with an iPod.
I replaced the freehub body on my kysryium elite wheel and used Phil's Tenacious to lube it. It took your post for me to notice that the noise level is a third of what it was. Nice and quiet. Doh!

+1

Also, some Campy wheelsets, Reynolds Attacks and Assaults and Tune hub pawls are loud.
I used to have an older set of Zipp 303 clinchers that was loud as well, but after removing the cassette body we found that there was almost no grease in there. Slapped in some grease and it was much quieter.

I think it's because the pawl mechanism is a Hugi. Yeah very loud and doesn't have the subtle reverberation of a Chris King that make Chris Kings somewhat pleasant.

Surprised there seems so much love for loud freewheels. I've got a pair of Kysriums and Easton SLXs. Both are too loud in my opinion. I like the zen feeling of a silent freewheel. My Open Pro's with Ultegra Hubs feel downright silent compared to the Kysriums.

Sad that the 2003 Eurus is considered "vintage." I love my 2003 Eurus. And they're loud.

On a side note, don't break any spokes. It was a pain in the arse to locate them.

About a month ago I upgraded my wheels from the stock Shimano RS10s that came on my Tarmac to the ROL Race SL. This freehub is quite a change from the silent RS10. At first I didn't really like it, but it's nice to give pedestrians a bit of a warning before you scream past them!
