With the 2022 season nearing its end, it's time to look forward to 2023. And going by the announcements so far, it's going to be a good year, event-wise.

This first post is reserved for the list of events, and the dates they're planned (or expected, as long as dates have not been finalized).

As dates become available I'll update this post. Dates in bold have been officially announced. I've used the 2022 calendar as a baseline. Some events haven't shown any signs of life since 2019, but I've kept the ones I hope will be back someday. Maybe it'll help ...

If you have anything you'd like to add or correct, please chime in, and I'll update the calendar. Please, always assume this list is not up-to-date and check the actual dates before making any commitments. BTW, I have deleted Eroica Britannia, as it was cancelled this year and has disappeared from the official Eroica.cc website. OTOH, I have added Eroica Montalcino and Eroica Dolomiti.

Registration for Montalcino opened this morning, and mrs non-fixie and I shall be attending, to see what Tuscany looks like in spring.

There was an edition last year, although it doesn't seem to be mentioned on their website. I know, because at Eroica Germania in August last year I ran into Belgian Alex Wauters, who was going to ride on afterwards to Milan for the event. His plan was to participate and then ride home, back to Belgium, afterwards. On his 1908 bike.

I had met Alex before, but it's not easy to have a beer and a peaceful conversation with him when he's in full attire:

Interesting. I'm on the mailing list, and the owe me a spot because i paid for 2020, then it got cancelled. I guess they don't like me.

No worries, apparently I got it wrong. I just did a little digging, and Alex actually took part in the Granfondo Milan - Sanremo, on September 12, 2021, not the Gran Corsa event. Sorry, my bad.

It was, as it turns out, part of a project called "Moorslede - Milan", an effort to re-enact what Cyriel Van Hauwaert did in 1908: ride from Paris to Milan and then ride the race. Which Van Hauwaert won.

Millstone

I am planning to go to Eroica Limburg. Just not sure yet what distance I should do. 100 or 150. I'll probably just go for 150 and change it (if possible) 2-3 months before the event, if the bike seems/feels uncomfortable. Or my fitness isnt up to spec.

Über Die Grenze (in Huissen, NL) ... really depends on the holiday-plans here.

That is too bad! I attended it in it's first year, 2014 and I had always hoped to return and ride it again. With 1900 riders that year it had a spectacular route, excellent support and the best vendors! The post ride celebration was amazing with music, lots of food and dueling Gin & Tonic bars! But the most important aspect to me was that every finishing rider was received with the same enthusiasm, unlike other locations. At other venues such as in California the last riders in are often overlooked and almost forgotten, even though they worked the hardest to finish. Eroica Britannia did not let that happen!

I attended in 2018, and while it was a very charming and well-organized event, I got the impression that the organizers were struggling with the format. They had moved out of Bakewell, and into a field in the middle of nowhere and had tried to make it interesting "for the whole family".



I couldn't have taken that picture in Gaiole or Valkenburg, where there is a rich bicycle racing history, and an event like Eroica is more "naturally grounded". The subsequent move to Goodwood alienated the event even more from the original target audience, I believe.

I understand that the Lake District is pretty, but with the incredibly rich cycling history of South London, I would have thought that Goodwood would have been more palatable to British riders. Apparently, many thought otherwise. No one hates 1.) automobiles and 2.) rich people more than I do, but why not think of it as blokes from the smoke coming to Sussex to invade the swells?
When I signed up this year, I was going to ride all the way from Croydon, just to make that point (to myself).
I was suprised by the steely reception of British riders to the Goodwood event. I think the organizers tried their best to give us something good. All we had to do was show up and ride.

Looks like I have a chance to move to Garmisch this winter so I might be able to make some of the Italian events

There was the small matter of payment. A ticket for the weekend was Ł70, and if you wanted to sell a few parts a place to do so would set you back Ł200 plus VAT. And I'm guessing a place to stay in the area won't be cheap either during Goodwood Revival weekend.

I see AG2R is helping to sponsor this ride. I am not sure I have seen a pro cycling team sponsor a vintage ride, before. It's good to see.
