Bikepacking through the ages. My set up is ever changing and never the same twice.
1985: Panniers. Not my favorite.
2009: Trailer era. Really not my favorite

I understand the other stuff, but what are tar balls and why would they be floating in the water?

Tar balls for when crude oil or (heavier refined petroleum products) mixes with water. The river flows into the Atlantic just north of the city, where there is shipping and petroleum-related industry.

Bought my rig in 2010, but haven't toured as hoped. Have done several bike overnites, including recently to NJ's Bass River State Forest some 47 miles away from home.
Kept it simple, choosing not to cook or make coffee, so I didn't even really fill my panniers.
Hoping to do one more such outing before the end of October, when most state campsites shut down.

Just got back from a tour through France, Spain, and Portugal. The weather was crazy, from 40 C heat to torrential hail, rainfall, and thunderstorms
I liked the light in this picture of my rig.

We have camped in the general area but always travelled by car to get there.
Now that availability of time is not a major issue, I’m contemplating beginning with shorter touring trips and see how it goes.
I like the thoughtful warning about not picking up anything… perhaps, unexploded grenade. 🤪

My Roberts Roughstuff next to some pile of old rocks on The King Alfred way.
And a nice camping spot on The Ridgeway later the same day.

That whole area was super cool to hang at for a week. Any longer and we would go broke.
Between Glenwood Springs activities 25min north, Snowmass MTB 25min south, whitewater rafting 25min in some direction, and then the towns too- there was no downtime.
