That's exactly why my plan is to do a DIY conversion, rather than to buy an assembled bike.

And not everyone has the time, skill, or patience to do this. Companies need to stop making products proprietary.

DIY transformation does have its benefits, you can modify it according to your needs to suit you, but it is a technical job.

Yeah, DIY renovation is a technical job, it requires a certain amount of technology and time, and most people don't have that much time to study this matter.

If I expect to fix it when it breaks I should be able to build it in the first place.

My current is a Peugeot touring bike I bought in 1985. I've replaced parts, over the years, but it still works just fine.

When I buy an ebike I'll expect it to last as long. Or as long as I do, anyway.
