I have an 81 912 and I guarantee your 88 512 is every bit as good a bike if not better. And my 912 is damn nice.

Adding a data-point, just to note that my '84 Nine-Twelve in the 57cm size weighs a portly 24lbs, about what I'd expect a Five-Twelve to perhaps weigh.
That's the same weight as my SR Semi-Pro, and also close to the same as my surprisingly-light 1977 Centurion Pro-Tour (@ 23.3lbs with SPD pedals and folding Paselas).
The Nine-Twelve has double-butted Cr-Mo main tubes and Cr-Mo fork blades, but somewhat like my Merckx bikes and especially like my ~'73 Gitane TDF, it somehow weighs more than expected.
Good riding bike though, I have to say.

Thanks for sharing the link to the Miyata Catalogs. Really enjoying it. Getting nostalgic too. My first real bike was the 1984 Miyata Ridge Runner which I still own. I paid for it with my part time job where I got paid $3.35 an hour. It took me all summer to afford it. Totally worth it.
