And as a result I'm just now finishing my first cuppa. That was rough hour and a half. Been awhile.

I never met him but some of his writing was good. Back in the 80s Zapata Espinoza was racing MX and writing in to MX Action magazine. I guess he connected with those guys and became editor of some of their magazines, including Road Bike Action, which is where he is now.
I met him out on the road bike. He was friendly enough but wanted to go more than he wanted to chat. Some of my friends have ridden road bikes with him. That's the extent of my interactions with the Hi-Torque guys.

In a lot of ways much the same: https://www.douglasfoundationrepair....undations.html
When you get into the hills it gets different since you have areas of very stable limestone with pockets of unstable clay. That presents some foundation engineering issues.
The problem is that a lot of volume builders will throw a slab foundation down that is only supported with grade beams. It usually takes piers to have a stable slab. Piers are expensive.

Though of course, we do get freeze/ thaw cycles in Texas, as you know. So there's that too.

I believe it was the old Moby Dick movie in which I first saw a man signing by "making his mark" (an X) on the contract. That one took some explaining as I was about 5 at the time and able to write my name...

My sister and her husband had pure head cold symptoms. Couldn't breathe for a week. Major sinus headaches. I had only cold symptoms and a terrible sore throat for three nights. And fatigue. Lots of fatigue.
Hang in there. Don't do damage with impatience.

Actually only ended up with white because when I bought the madone, we realized my current shoe was too big. The XXX white in maroon was on sale, and the price was too good not to get it. Some point I would like a white shoe just for racing, for everyday riding I am not that vain.

Environmental issues - freeze/thaw, thermal expansion, snow and ice treatment (salt, which breaks down pavement and corrodes the reinforcing steel), etc.
Truck and vehicular traffic - the heavier the vehicle and the more dense the traffic, the more wear and tear. An 18-wheeler stresses the surface more than 6,000 times as much as the average car. If the truck is overloaded by just 10%, the road stress increases by 46%.
Money - US interstates are built to last about 20 years whereas roads in some European countries are built to last 40 years. Thicker concrete can prolong life, but it is very expensive in terms of materials, labor, etc. Asphalt is cheaper than concrete, but concrete is much harder and more expensive to repair. To put it in perspective, the twelve foot wide bike path they are building between Dallas and Fort Worth is currently costing about $1 million per mile. Actual roads are many multiples of that.

I don't have boas, but I do have one pair with two different ratchet systems plus velcro for the toe box, and and another with one ratchet and two velcro straps. The former is much preferable. I can tighten the on the fly without looking, like before a climb.
