Ok so here's my first attempt at painting the flutes on a seatpost. I went with masking the flutes with painters tape. Here we go.

But there's an easier way. The one time I painted a fluted seat post like that, I didn't bother masking anything. I painted the flutes freehand, being reasonably careful, waited it for it to dry, then used a single-sided razor blade to scrape off anything that wasn't in the flute. Lay the blade across both sides of the flute and scrape gently. That gives a nice, crisp line, and it's then easy to scrape off any other overage. An X-acto knife would work just as well. Heck, a pocket knife would probably work just as well. A credit card might work just as well, Mine came out rather nicely; it certainly passed the five-foot test and probably the one foot test. (I can't check because I no longer have the seat post.)
This technique has limited applicability. It is 100% not recommended for cleaning up pinstriping on a frame. But it works great on a seat post.

bikingshearer I actually did use my box cutter with a fresh blade to clean up the edges on the flutes. Thanks for pointing that out it could help another BF member attempting this. It made the edges cleaner with minimal touch up needed

I was on a painting theme today. Started the morning painting the exterior of my home until it got around 86° where it got too hot to continue. In the meantime went to Michael's for some Testors paint. Im hooked.
And house painting while the wife sipped wine and supervised.

Lol I see it being useful for someone in the future looking into painting flutes. Hey if they come across ur razor blade/box cutter suggestion they'll be able to use it.

This is essentially my technique whenever paint-filling. Either use #0000 steel wool after on the high spots, or wipe off the excess with a towel slightly dampened with mineral spirits.

I guess I can add more of the recent stuff:
Ochsner SL model:
Ochsner SL with wobbly wheels and other issues
Wheels serviced, new cables & housings, seatpost, saddle, bars, stem, pedals, tires/tubes. No test ride yet as it keeps snowing.
Davidson Impulse:
No front wheel, paint looked trashed, neither shifter worked, rusted chain, etc....
Paint almost mint after polish, new wheels, all parts serviced, shifters brought back to life, seatpost, saddle, pedals, chain, BB, tires/tubes, bottle cages. One of my top favs on the road.
1985 Martelly built SL tubed racer:
Good shape other than peeling decals and old school tape, computer.
Decals removed, all parts updated other than the crank, crank, seatpost, stem, handlebars, saddle. total rocket now!
Team Fuji:
Local find, dirty and gummed up.
Totally clean and service. Beautiful bike that I enjoyed fixing up and then moving on to a happy new owner.
Wayne Evans (Denver builder) custom bike:
Not bad, great price, mismash of parts. Custom built for a Paris Brevet Paris by a 3 time RAAM winner. Blue paint chewed up bad by chain drop/slap.
Had the blue paint redone, left the rest to preserve the unique logo and such. Rebuilt with a very nice Dura Ace 7700 setup and some Mavic wheels. True joy on the road but not what I would call quick handling in the front. I do have blue matching bottle cages on it with "oil slick" bolts that match well to the tricolor frame.

The seller had the original Rolls saddle, so I used that. I replaced the seatpost, stem, and bar with ones more suited to me, and got rid of the hideous chartreuse bar tape. Apart from that, it was just cleaning, polishing, repacking the headset, bottom bracket, and hubs, and new cables, housing, and tires. Oh, and one black rubber nub, for the front brake pivot bolt.

Maybe just a scuffing with 0000 steel wool and then cleaning with quips and rubbing alcohol. I used Testors enamel paint and #2 paint brushes.
