In recent years, I've mostly run 42/16, but now I'm running 42/17 which makes the hills less painful and is good practice for me at maintaining a higher cadence. If I switched to fixed, I'd at least go back to 42/16, I reckon.

We spent the second night of our cross country ride at the former military base in Port Townsend, WA, where a lot of that was filmed. It’s now a neat state park. It was one of at least three film connections during the trip. We spent a night in Dyersville, IA. No one rode out to the field of dreams. We also spent a night in Grand Rapids, MN. Home town of Frances Ethel Gumm, better known as Judy Garland.

I like a 1.3 gain ratio for those occasional 16km 1000m climbs. On my current gravel bike that is obtained using a 24t chainring with a 40t cog.

Yeah, there's a price to pay for running a wide cassette.

Missing cogs on Shimano 11-speed, up to 20:
  • 11-34: 12, 14, 16, 18, 20
  • 11-32: 15, 17, 19
  • 11-30: 16, 18, 20
  • 11-28: 16, 18, 20
  • 11-25: 18, 20
  • 11-23: 20

My favorite gear is my endura cycling shorts - not bibs. Size M. Favorite gear on the bike? Garmin head unit and Varia. Gear on drivetrain? Who really cares?

My favorite is 52-11, but I have to be going downhill to use it.

Perhaps a more useful way of looking at gear ratio gaps:
