Velonews did a frame stiffness test a couple of years ago, and it pretty much confirmed conventional wisdom in that all the steel and Ti frames were substantially less rigid than the CF frames tested.
Now you can debate whether that's a good or a bad thing, but virtually every Ti frame, even with butted, shaped oversized tubes, is going to be less stiff than a typical CF frame.

For those who are against fashion (read. Don't want. Carbon fibre), just remember fashion will always be lighter. There's no way the next in thing with frame materials will be heavier than the previous fashion. There is a technical reasn why carbon is popular.
