Fair enough, but I think Trek is supporting Wounded Warriors. Based on John Burke's book, I doubt he would be comfortable flying his corp. colors for this former Pres. His sister ran as a Dem to unseat Gov Walker in Wis. a few years ago.

FWIW, a bud of mine got a call from then Senator Kerry, asking about renting a bike in the bay area while he was down for business. He said he was a class act and a nice guy. That's more than I can say for myself. lol

It cost a huge amount of money for the locals, just ask Honolulu. Feds do not pay for all the local police overtime, road closures, lost work from people sitting in traffic.

I wish Obama would for once do a winter vacation somewhere else and give us a break.

I would love watching you ride with him on his dirt trail on his ranch. He would show you who the real wuss is.

Yes, I know. I live 1 mile from the Wisconsin border.

Fortunately not everyone sees things through political lenses. It's the right thing for both groups to support, and they did. And they both deserve credit for that. The Wounded Warriors that participated had a great time on the bikes and with the former president. And that's good no matter what.

I am a mountain biker, and perhaps he would, or maybe he wouldn't, we'll never know. But dirt trails are easy, I bet he'd struggle around my back garden - the roses and berberis can leave nasty scratches.

I hope he is better on his bike than on a Segway:

I ride to work, save 20 pounds of CO2 for the planet.

John Kerry rides to work, releases 960 pounds of CO2.

Burke family, supported the biggest doper in cycling history, act as if they never knew about those Team Trek bikes on ebay. Nice family....

I am not sure many of us would do any better first time on a segway.

His ranch trail is talked about as a hard mountain bike trail. Those that did ride with him say he has crazy good skills, rides very hard, often dropping many of his secret service.

Kerry crashed his bicycle on a closed paved bike path.

My garden has a very pretty rockery at the far end, very difficult to ride over without damaging the aubretia and sedum. Those that ride with me are often left in awe at how I manage to stay upright. I don't know if I drop the secret service because they are so secret I never see them.

I did try a Segway on holiday once, and since I am possibly as good a rider as Bush I also fell off.

THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU for voicing a pet peeve of mine as well. I wish !@#$%^& Alan Wong's would go move to the other side of the island ('sorry, CB, I realize you're on the other side of the island). Or better yet, his semi-sister should move to the mainland.

It's settled, then, Gary Johnson for prez!

Tip of the helmet to Sec. Kerry, but IMHO he runs well behind Alvee Adee for best cyclist cabinet officer.

Fun fact: the bowler hat was originally designed as a (equestrian) riding helmet!

Well, we maybe could discuss JK the cyclist and leave his politics out of it.

I for one and happy to see any person of that age still cycling and as hard as he seems to.

I never begruded Dubyea's time on the bike, SS need to provide security, etc... They are people first and it's some of the things I liked and respected about Bush, his awareness of the need to exercise and the sport he chose.

Yes as a well known 74 year old cyclist traveling the world with a very hectic schedule in a surreal or incongruous environment not as a politician--besides I don't care for politics.

As a cyclist he is just another guy.

He is well known as a politician, not as a cyclist.

Yes we know that he is a politician, but this thread was not meant to make a point about his "other occupation" although he is actually more of an ambassador at this time!
In any case-- impressive finding time to go ride between constant high pressure meetings and intense traveling schedules--riding in "surreal or incongruous environments" that you would not expect--he could be riding a home trainer in the gym at his hotel which I am sure he does as well but not so. . .
More over within a year of a major fracture with surgery at his age, most of us cyclists would have hung the bike for good!
That is why "As a cyclist he is NOT just another guy."

Now that is funny.

At his level, his staff does all the constant high pressure meetings and then he walks in for the photo op. He gets to fly on a Boeing C-32 military passenger transportation version of the Boeing 757 by the United States Air Force. It has a bed for him just to sleep in, while his staff must try to rest in seats. While his staff is doing the heavy work, he gets to cycle, play tourist, go to fancy dinners and parties.
