Were it me I'd just get the Campagnolo freehub body for your wheel (Fulcrum is a subdivision of Campagnolo) and use a Campy cassette. Veloce is reasonably priced.

Yes, even better. When I built my cassette the way I described I didn't have that option. It'll cost more though since then you need the freehub and the cassette and when you look at Campy it is always more expensive. Even Veloce can be pricey.

It will work IMO

I did what you are talking about. I previously used a Shiftmate but wasn't thrilled with it. Took a cheap Shimano 10 speed cassette, replaced 6 Shimano spacers with Campy spacers. Largest cogs were tied together so I couldn't alter. Did this on 8-9-10 speed hub. Worked great, so it can be done.
