Here's my challenges at Worlds:

Many of the events, such as the match sprints, are "Women 55+". Me against a 55 year old phenom in a match sprint. Okay.

The WR in my age group in the 500M TT is 41.771. That's the mark, but that doesn't mean that's what it will take to get on the podium. It's likely a 43 and change will do it.

The 2K pursuit WR for my age group is 2:41:36 and is owned by someone we know. I'm a full 45 seconds slower, but who knows what will happen. I'm thinking a podium shot will have to be 2:50 or less.

Who knows with the TP, the field is once again 55+. The WR, and this is a 3K distance (I believe we're doing 2K at Worlds) for 50+ women is 3:56:844, set by some VERY FAST women.

For the Team Sprint (500 meters at VSC), another 55+ event, Jane and I would have to ride a 38 second or better time to have a podium chance.

I'm as ready as I will be. I'm in the mix, and my chances are as good as anyone's. This is by far the biggest race I've ever competed in, but what's cool is that I've met many of the athletes I'll be riding against. It will feel like a "local race". I'm looking forward to it!

Rest day for me yesterday, well deserved.

This morning I was JRA on the road bike. I wound up going kinda climbs on account of it being chilly, 30 miles & 2000 ft climbing.

I will say it was pretty fun, lately my road bikes are a big neglected & I sometimes forget how enjoyable a good road ride is...

I did my Forty First Session at Hellyer for this season today (not counting the races I've done there this year). I drive to Carson for Worlds this coming Saturday.

All of the folks at the session today were in Worlds mode. @Hermes knows probably all of them. I know @Racer Ex does. Folks were fine tuning, doing starts, 100's, motorpacing. I did 1 standing 500, and then 1 flying 200. Both felt pretty good, I'm consistent if nothing else. Tomorrow is a recovery ride on the TT bike, then two days off, then the drive.

Worlds feels like any other race does to me right now. It's going to be longer, nine days I'll be there. I'm looking forward to that. That it's pretty special is not lost on me, though, the bigger impact is that this upcoming week is the culmination of the entire past year, starting last October. Pretty much everything I've done on the bike the last twelve months was with Worlds in mind. It's going to be sad when it's over.

But then I'll start all over again, with some new experiences behind me.

Plunked down a grand on one of them fancy schmancy smart trainers. Zwift Island, here I come!

In all seriousness, I'm hoping that it would improve my experience on the TT bike as it's been hard to find a place to ride 20 min intervals (my tolerance for risk on the TT bike is lower). I figure I must have spent 45 hrs just driving to places conducive to training from early May to end of July, so having more time is certainly welcomed.

Hopefully see you out on the volcano course in a month or so. I had just set up my trainer in the house, after this happened we took it down and moved it into the garage for the time being.

Dang, I've been busy! I've been working a lot, covering for a guy who took two weeks off, plus some travel.

Short versions:

Friday: 1h:27 at endurance pace, TSS 84, IF .76
Saturday: 1h:36 small group ride, TSS 114, IF .85. TSS 500 for the week. 380 mile drive to AL for my mother-in-law's 88th birthday.
Sunday: Birthday party, then drive back home. I was pretty fried.
Monday: Was supposed to be off, but called in to work. Semi-catatonic.
Tuesday: 1h:28 at endurance pace, TSS 78, IF .73. Worked, found out that I'd have to work Wednesday which had been scheduled as a day off.
Wednesday: 2h:28 at endurance pace with 3x8' threshold intervals. Since I had to be at work, the ride started at 0547 according to the Garmin. TSS 149, IF .78. Glad I have a good headlight!

Tomorrow will be 1h:30 at endurance pace, Friday is a 30' recovery ride, and Saturday is a charity ride that our shop supports, so I'll be there at 0600 to set up the tent, ride 75 miles at 0730, tear down the tent afterward, and work at the shop till 1700. Sunday I'll polish off what's left of the 550-650 weekly TSS goal in the morning and do nap repeats in the afternoon.

@sarals, it won't be over when the racing is over at VSC in 2 weeks, its all part of the overall fabric of your cycling life. After Worlds, you will enjoy a little unstructured time on the bike and then start building towards the next thing. Which you will be all the better for after your experience at Worlds.

@revchuck, wicked busy. I'm surprised you found time to ride with me two mornings this week.

I had a workout on the TT bike today, 3 five mine intervals at 114%. I always try to do one interval up hill, one on rolling terrain and one down hill. The down hill one felt kind of tricky today, I think its mostly that its hard for me to generate power while pedaling fast.

I rode with a friend today. He got mixed up as to what I was doing and we got a separated for a bit. But eventually reconnected and made it to coffee with plenty of time to spare.

Crazy day at work, computer issues.

Rest tomorrow and then away again for mountain biking in Big Bear. I know. Its a little nutso, this mtb fascination.

Good luck at the WC's Sara and Hermes! I'm envious, maybe next year I'll be a player there too!

Spending the week at our cabin and surviving my one week self imposed "recovery and reset". Did do one 20 mile bike trail ride on the MTB with one of our guest. The guy recently got his first drop bar bike. My wife said that he was concerned about being able to ride with me. We start out and he goes right to 17-20 mph! Thankfully after 5-6 miles his ego got the best of him and the pace slackened to 16-17 mph, which on the MTB is conversational pace for me.

Training for next years season begins on Monday.

At VSC this afternoon for some topping up.

The infield is set up and racers are staking out territory on the main floor.

I have chatted with some of the international guys and helped a guy from Argentina find the bathroom. This is going to be a totally amazing event.

@Hermes, the butterflies have started! (I hope Hellyerville has been staked out).

I spent the day "gathering" (and hoping to hear from Coach). I just know I'll forget something. Like my bike.

See you there, @Hermes!

Hope to see you next year, AJ!

Openers on river path from El Dorado to Seal Beach today. It was a beautiful morning!

Checked in, got my packet. People were MUCH nicer today at VSC than they were yesterday. Saw some friends, staked a claim to an area in the pit, took photos, now relaxing.

I tried to post this (less today's ride) last night, but the internet decided to not cooperate.

Short versions of the week's remaining rides:

Thursday: 1h:27 at endurance pace, TSS 78, IF .73. The same route as Tuesday's ride with the same stats, except 9 kj less.

Friday: 44 minutes at recovery pace, TSS 18, IF .50.

Saturday: 76-mile charity ride, TSS 220, IF .77. I was wondering why I felt so tired afterward until I checked the PMC and saw that it was the hardest ride I've done since the Cheaha Ultra last May. I came home, showered and took a nap, and the lights went out as soon as my head hit the pillow.

Sunday: 2h:04 at endurance pace, TSS 93, IF .67. I could've made the bottom end of my TSS goal range with a 30' recovery ride and had given myself permission to do that, but I went out with two full bottles just in case I was feeling good enough for a couple of hours. Turned out that I was. I did take it relatively easy. My butt hadn't quite recovered, though!

Stats for the week: TSS 636, CTL 53, ATL 85, TSB -32. This was my biggest week since May. I guess breaking your leg will do that for you.

Yesterday, rest day. I went over to the velodrome last night to watch the women's 5K scratch races. Too late, but I got to see the awards ceremony. I did see an awesome men's point race, 30KM. A South African fella won it. He was definitely the class of the field. The race was stupid fast, too. Fun to watch!

Today, this evening, I race my 500. I will do my very best in the moment.

I was supposed to do a long ride yesterday. I developed a sore throat Tuesday and it was worse when I woke up yesterday...and the weather was absolutely perfect to ride. I had the good-angel-bad-angel thing going on while I drank my morning coffee, and decided against the ride. Even though it was the right decision, I was kicking myself.

I did about an hour at endurance pace this morning and felt really good. I'll see how I feel in the morning, might do the long ride tomorrow.

I began my training for next year's track cycling this week. Today was core/legs then a bike ride to shake out the hurt. Started with some core WU by doing upside down bosu ball squats, pull ups, big stability ball lifting with small weights. Main work was box stepping sets with 50 lbs of dumbbells, 5 x 2' intervals on the Concept 2 Rower and a couple sets of walking lunges with hand weights. Post off the bike work I took a 1.5 hour ride with some hard 20" efforts just to get the mojo back. It was mildly surprised as I hit a peak watt @ 1,220 and 20" @ 778. I found a Versa Climber on Craigslist that I will get the week of Oct 23. Let the fun begin!!!

I had a rest day on Monday, TT workouts on Tues & Wed. Tuesday's was a bit of a fail, but Wed went ok.

Bat$hit crazy day at work Wed, got home late & then up early on Thursday to drive up to Tahoe for a work conference which is only half-days so of course there is also mountain biking.

Rode the Emigrant Trail today with some friends. It's an 11ish mile out and back single track which I've done once before. Mostly easy but there are some rocky bits which I had trouble with the last time but mostly rode up today without any trouble. There is a way to take fire roads 75% of the way back and I was a little sad when my friends opted for that. Really nice day too, low 60s and sunny.

Yesterday I rode the Incline & Marlette sections of the Flume Trail as an out & back with some friends. One who bought a hardtail because she was "never gonna ride single track, just fireroads" and the other who until yesterday (when we rode Emigrant Trail) had never ridden more than 7 miles of single track. They were game though, tempted by my FB pics from the Labor Day trip.

We wound up riding from Mt Rose Hwy and down to an overlook at Marlette Lake and then back. I thought it would be easy- 25 miles, yes, but only 1200 ft climbing. But it was really tiring, we were all a little punchy at the end. We got done a little late because we came upon a tourist woman on a rental who had just done a endo on a sandy steep section of fireroad connector. She had hit her head and appeared to have broken her right clavicle. She refused having us call 911, so we made her a sling and helped her walk down the hill until her husband made his way back until the hill. He refused 911 too, it was frustrating because it was late, getting cold and they had miles to walk with two bikes to turn their rental bikes in. I think she felt embarrassed she had crashed and he felt embarrassed that he'd gotten so far ahead of her when she was hurt, they just wanted privacy so we let them go...

My friends stopped a lot to admire the amazing scenery and also to walk bits of trail that seemed tricky. I mostly got in a groove and rode smartly along, stopping at a sunny spot to wait for them. Literally took all day but it was totally enjoyable.

We've done 50 miles on the mtb in the past two days, probably 40 miles of single track. My legs are a little tired but I do want to get out & ride a little something today. My friends are leaving this am but we don't head home until tomorrow.
