I don't think of it as 'vintage', oddly enough, even though it's at least 26 years old.

I beg your pardon, C+V rider, check, steel, check, filet brazed from one of the greatest and best early, builders of all time, check, C+V, check.

TIG welded, actually. At this point in Ritchey's history (1992 according to the serial number), Tom 'had his hands on' every bike, but only actually BUILT the fillet brazed ones.

Right, I figured that but I'm not splitting hairs either way, C+V, in or out, IN, period.

Because I pay attention to Internet discussions of Ritchey bikes, I picked up on a post where a guy saw a Ritchey on EBay and because it had no SN#, he wondered whether it was authentic. It was my friend's bike, I alerted him, and he and the police arrived just ahead of the FedX truck that would have picked it up to ship to Belgium.

Wow awesome story and a real gem of a bike!

Yes agreed. As Paul Brodie said (something to the effect of): the early 80s Stumpjumpers were so-so MTBs .. the early 80s Ritchey's blew his mind.

Slippery slope here, apples and oranges.

Tom poured his heart and soul into his deal.

Sinyard had a very heavy thumb on the scale at Big S and they were money making high production bikes and for that they were a pretty good value at a pretty good price point.

If Merz and the others would have had more leeway it could well have been a different story but Mike had all of them on a very short leash when it came to idea's and out of the box thinking. If it cost extra to produce it was not gonna happen.

My understanding is that Merz was not very involved in the Stumpjumper design he was focused on the road bikes. The early stumpjumpers were basically Sinyard taking a Ritchey to Japanese manufacturers and saying 'copy this for me please'. Cant remember where I heard this anecdote..

Merz had plenty of input beforehand and behind the scenes, just not much hands on or actual output. The Stumpy was a basic bike at best that did what it was supposed do, as with all things big S, make money.

Sinyard slept on Jim's couch when he came to PDX peddling Campy parts way before he and (mainly) Jim figured out the tires that lit the whole thing off that led to big S being the juggernaut it came to be.

Jim built several mtb's before going to and during his time there, some of the actual team bikes I think.

Here's one of 10 or so that he built before he went.

O/K Richey fans. Please look at pics and confirm whether or not this is a '96 P23. That is what the previous owner says it is.

The decals on it match these Velocal P 22 decals and since I am repainting everything I want to have the correct decals on it. Bottom bracket stamped 718. Not sure if the linear pull brakes are stock .

Thats how I got into mountain biking in like 1982. I'd ride my road bike by your store in San Anselmo / Fairfax and Gary had some kind of "try a mountain bike" arrangement. So I borrowed one of those nice Ritcheys for an hour and was hooked.

So no s/n, Campy RDO's, sealed bearing BB, seatstay cluster that matches one on efbay that they think is an 82 so who knows.

Here's the other thread with more gory details.

Proceed with caution here…who actually built these 85 Fishers is a bit of a mystery. I have owned since new an 85 Fisher Competition also with CyclArt paint. Ritchey and Fisher parted ways in 84 but rumor has been that Fisher still had some Ritchey-built frames after the split and that Fisher had these painted at CyclArt and decaled as “Fisher Mountain Bikes” with the famous Mt Tam silhouette….these bikes were, as rumor goes, Everests and Comps, flagship bikes for the new company…none have telltale Teesdale initials and have serial numbers very much like Ritcheys. I live a couple blocks from the old Kelly and Fisher shop and folks around here swear mine is Ritchey-built but until Fisher confirms (or Ritchey inspects and confirms) it’s only conjecture.

Owen Mulholland and his Ritchey Tandem

This pic of the late Owen Mulholland with his former wife and son popped up on Facebook a few weeks ago. Some folks reached out to me as it appears my Ritchey tandem is Owen’s former bike. Drive system changed from same side drive to cross over but otherwise much the same including the hand painted Cinelli logo on stem. I communicated with Owen’s son Emile, he said that his mom said no more family tandem rides after their descent from Pantoll to Stinson Beach on the slopes of Mt Tam…Owen was evidently passing tour buses with little Emile strapped to his back!

Great photo of Mulholland and his family. My brother and his wife toured Europe that way with their son, on two Masi singles. This would have been the early 70s. The same-side drivetrain shown in the photo was something Tom believed in back in those days. Our friend Jobst had broken several of the old four-sided spindles so we figured it was likely a strong tandem team would do the same eventually. I believe that is no longer an issue with modern spindles. Your bike certainly looks good. Is it getting any miles?
