Not sure I was going to make it home today, it was bloody hot. Overnight low was 81 and it was 82 when I left at 0715 with no wind and high humidity. Had to climb Newport Coast at mile 40, hot but doable. But the last five miles were tough. Ran out of water with 2 miles to go, drank two bottles in 16 miles, probably should have had another Nuun along as I finished the first Nuun bottle before the break so just water after that. Don't think it was a calorie deficit bonk, had my normal cereal and banana for breakfast and a Clif bar at the break which is typical.
HR would recover fairly quickly to below 120 when I stopped, but even modest exertion would see it back into the upper 140s very quickly. Absolute temperatures were higher yesterday but there was a breeze and much less humidity, so did not affect me as much.
We had a guest rider from Miami, he thought it was a nice day!

My morning ride at 9:00, temps at 70. My second ride at 10:30 it was 76. This is in Omaha, NE. Temps are 89 right now, time to go to the pool before they close for the season.

Well there's your problem. I was home from 45 miles before you rolled out. This heat wave is no joke. I ran out of water on both Wednesday and Friday, both times within 6 miles of home.
So I've been heading out before 5am to be sure to be home by 9am.Mildly related, and certainly from the "you couldn't plan this" file, this morning's ride logged 2,126ft of climbing. September 3rd, 2016's ride? 2,126ft of climbing.

Yeah, I'm not an 0500 type rider, or 0500 anything for that matter. Club rides start at 0800 and I have an 8 mile ride to the start.

Yesterday I seriously wanted to jump into bay by Newport Dunes as I crossed ped bridge to cut over to PCH from back bay. THANK GOODNESS weather is likely returning to normal!

well something in the power steering went out on the 2005 Tahoe so I have to get it fixed before Saturday as my son and I have a ride event to attend (2017 Dirty Dozen Classic in the Tri-Cities, WA.... we are doing the 20 mile, and this is an event with lots of climbing).
Good thing we have a couple other vehicles.

That's probably a reasonable trade off. This is a pretty nice riding area. Went out with the wife for a ride this am, enjoying the return if the marine layer! I went on and did some hills after riding with her, just got back, it is 10:00 am, still overcast and just 75 degrees. Oh happy day!

I yawned a couple of times, but I did not sleep 'til Brooklyn. About 95 miles, at least 30 of which were in a steady rain. The guy in the light blue is missing his right hand and about 1/3 of his right forearm.

It is a fun ride. This was my 16th year. You start out in farmland and end up in Manhattan and then Brooklyn after a ferry ride from Hoboken, NJ. Learned that the guy leaning over lives about 2 blocks from me.

Looks fun.
Just got back from my ride, we haven't cracked 80 degrees yet. going to the pool to shut it down for the season. it was so overcast here the sun was red.

No. I didn't examine the bike closely or talk to him about it, but a guy in my group did. There are two different types of shifters mounted on the left side for the FD and RD. The one brake lever operates both brakes. (His right arm rests on a pad. Notice his right shoulder is slightly slumped to the right.) He does have a prosthetic hand, but it doesn't work for riding.
It is a fun ride. This was my 16th year. You start out in farmland and end up in Manhattan and then Brooklyn after a ferry ride from Hoboken, NJ. Learned that the guy leaning over lives about 2 blocks from me.

Brrrr ... you guys with the excess heat mind sending a little this way?
50 degrees and 12 mph winds this morning ... had to break out the tights and arm warmers this morning. Supposed to warm back up a bit later in the week and into next week at least.

We had some overnight lows in the 50s like... 4 months ago. Of course, in another couple of months our nighttime lows will be your daytime highs. And that's crazy. I'll suffer the handful of +110º days during the summer for our frosty 40º winters.

Most people start in New Hope, PA. A couple of people get bussed further along on the route to Lyons, NJ and do about 55 miles. A few hard core people start in Philly. Thinks it's about 135 miles from there. Since there is very limited SAG, you need to have a proven ability to handle that distance.
Here is the New Hope to Hoboken stretch:

From there, we take a ferry across the Hudson River, ride down the Hudson bike path, ride a few blocks in Manhattan traffic then cross the Brooklyn Bridge, which is an ordeal. The south side of the walkway is supposed to be for pedestrians and the north side for bikes. But many of the the tens of thousands of tourists walking the bridge cannot seem to grasp that. You also have to watch out for selfie sticks.
Once we reach Brooklyn, the hotel where we shower and change is about 6 blocks away.

Yeah really wanted leg warmers and long sleeves this morning pulled out long sleeve but couldnt find leg warmers so waited until this evening...
What do do after a quick 12 mile hit on the bike... Well enjoy a nice local IPA of course!!!
