Being from Miami too, I've been pretty anxious to ride some mountains. But this is exactly one of my fears holding me back. I should probably read that power point if I ever do try it lol.

There's always the risk that something can unexpectedly go wrong, like the OP experienced (gravel, something darting into the road, etc.). But generally, if you take it easy going around curves, you're not likely to crash.

Ouch! That really bites. Hope you heal quickly and fully and get back to riding soon. Maybe the bike can be repaired.
