I found myself without any cable ends and put a dot of hot glue on the cleaned cable ends of one of my bikes. It's worked so good, I've used it on others.

I took a tip from Grant Peterson 20 years ago and use beeswax. Works very well, costs next to nothing, and a 1oz clump of it will last several lifetimes. Got it at the local health food store.

One late evening session I discovered that the insulation off a single-strand 1.5mm2 electrical cable is an excellent fit for brake cables. Not as much for shifter cables. I have, on occasion, also used heat shrink tubing, discarded spoke nipples and tiny pop rivets. Never done the super glue thing.

These are closed end connectors. Should be available in the electrical dept. of any hardware store. As a former field service tech I have bunches of them and have used them on cable ends in a pinch. Pro tip: Cut off the excess nylon casing for more aero performance. LOL.

Another fun option: heat the cable end with a torch until it glows and then press it into an airsoft BB or other plastic object.

I find the butt splice connector with the plastic outer cut off works great. I'm sure it would work fine with the plastic on but it looks like a "real" crimp end without it.
