This is kind of reviving an older thread but I thought I’d add my Montare for posterity:

Serial number T5K90175 leads me to think November 1985 manufacture. Note the brake bridge and chainstay bridge are drilled through; no brazed in threaded inserts. Also notice the rack mounts on the seat stays are not the barrel type.

But when I got it, it had Deore XT M730 6 speed shifters, XT U brake, M700 brake levers, M700 front derailleur, M730 rear derailleur, FC-6206 crank, 600 “starfish” headset, and a regular Shimano threaded cup ‘n cone bottom bracket, not the later pressed in bearing type.
XT pedals, not SunTour XC.

The front wheel was a parallax type hub so it had been replaced but the rear wheel was a 6 speed freewheel and a Shimano high flange unit. I can’t tell exactly which hub as the whole thing was covered in red and black spray paint. Probably the stock unit with an RM-25 rim.

Bullmoose bars painted to match, with a Strong seatpost, silver with black head. Specialized Delta S saddle may or may not be original.

I’m thinking it’s a 1986 model that had the shifters, derailleur and freewheel upgraded with the dealer kit mentioned previously.

If you can measure head tube angle you can determine what year…its either an 85 or 86 Montare…85 had a 68 degree head tube angle which was steepened to 69.5 degrees in 86.

Looks like an ‘85:

Kind of hard to see but reads right on 68 degrees with my cheap Harbor Freight gauge.

About 70.5 degree seat tube:

Thanks!
