I've got the cart all ready to go, but our son made off with the bike when he went to college three weeks ago.

I just picked up a Specialized Stumpjumper at a yard sale for him, so I'll be reclaiming my fishing bike.

He's 6'4" and growing, so finding him bikes isn't as easy as it used to be.

I just bought an inexpensive Sony pocket camera to leave on the boat.

I suppose a GoPro might be nice for that matter. The new Jackson kayak has a mount in place, so that may be the ticket.

This boat (Kraken) was designed from the bottom up to be a fishing machine, so it makes every day on the water a treat.

As for the Della Santa and the MAP, they make our daily rides a pleasure for us.

We do feel fortunate to have nice handbuilt bikes.

It takes a helluva climb to earn that view. Was that at the beginning or end of the ride?

I've been up there on motorcycles a few times, but never attempted it on any of my 30+ lb bicycles.

Middle of the ride. We went from Cottage Grove to Redwing on the Minnesota side including the climb from the Casino to 61. Then up to Memorial park and back on Wisconsin 35. Something like 68 miles round trip.

We only have chain pickerel here in the mid-atlantic. But we do have striped bass, so I will be seeking those through September and October in the Chesapeake Bay, and November in the ocean surf.

"He Likes It! Hey Mikey!"

So I'm probably dating myself here, but I'll bet many of you remember the old Life cereal commercial cited in the title. That's because this post is about a ride with my brother-in-law, Mike - and yes, he does answer to "Mikey".

Mikey's been having heart problems, something called A-fib, and five weeks ago he had a defibrillator implanted in his chest. His recovery has been slow but steady. Before his surgery, I built up an old Pugeot U08 for him to help him get back into shape. Well, Sunday the 3rd was our first ride together.


Here's Mikey, "Mr. Incredible", ready to ride in style!

Mikey is a character, as you can see from the photo. Great sense of humor, generous to a fault, he's actually one of my best friends. Anyway, we went to my favorite spot in Hastings, MN, and rode the flat section of the trail beside the river and along the levee before turning around at the climb up the bluffs. Grand total of about five miles, it was just the perfect ride to get him motivated. Brunch at "El Mexican" was ample reward:



I rode my hefty Pugeot Orient Express, loving the big fat comfy tires. We took many photos, allowing Mikey time to catch his breath frequently. These bikes look good together:



We stopped at the observation deck so he could try out the old art-deco binocular. He said he couldn't see a thing through it, and wants to come back with some Windex and paper towels to clean off those lenses. See what I mean?



Anyway, at one point the trail winds through the woods and, as I rode behind him at his pace, I noticed the sun dappling the trail ahead. I turned on the camera, aimed it in his general direction, and pressed the shutter on rapid fire:


One of them was timed perfectly! Here's Mikey, racing his shadow through the woods.

For the photographic purists out there, yes, I've manipulated this image quite a bit. It is meant to be an impressionist rendering of what I saw, not an accurate document. In other words, it was blurry...

But it sure does convey the spirit of the moment, doesn't it? Here's one in black and white, but I don't think it has the same pizzazz...



Any way, it was a perfect ride for him on a beautiful day, and it will lead to many more in the future. My work is done here...

It's the side of a small and mouldering barn.

I was thinking of getting together some friends for a fall Green Lane to Valley Forge round trip on the Perkiomen Trail. That's always a great ride. I plan on bringing it up with friends tonight. The more the merrier!

First jaunt on her, approximately 3 miles along the Boise Greenbelt, just to get a basic feel. Note the natural instagram filter known as "Western Wildfire" on this untouched iPhone photo taken at like 3:45 PM.

Hoping to put a new chain and front derailleur cable on tonight to restore the last bits of basic functionality.

Uh, what? - you say. Yes, I originally posted this on Monday night after a thoroughly enjoyable weekend. There was only one comment, thank you @Ballenxj, and I suspected that was because shortly after I posted it, the thread went to a new page where we all got to learn about fishing!

I've never fished from a bicycle, but I have ridden one (Stingray!) down to the creek with my cane pole over my shoulder, a long, long time ago. But I digress...

Anyway, my theory has been proven correct - many of us don't check the previous page(s) when we come back to the BF after some time away. Something to think about? You might be missing something good.

Slightly off topic - It looks like they officially renamed it back to its original Chatham Lifeboat Station. Some incredible history there.

If you are curious do a Google search for Pendleton Rescue February 1952. Then see the movie The Finest Hours. It's a Disney flick so it has a bit of fluff and a few tweaks of the details for movie purposes. But once it gets into the main event the details are almost verbatim from the Boston Globe articles Feb 1952. Check out the Orleans Historical Society's web pages. Unbelievably heroic stuff.
