Next question would be - how do you now whether you might get hurt before you get hurt?
For me, it's about responsibility. Because I am the one more at risk and because I am right there knowing the situation, I am responsible for letting other road users know whether or not the lane is wide enough and the situation otherwise appropriate for safe sharing. I easily exercise my responsibility by my positioning in the lane.
