Hit-and-run driver gets his come-uppance

This is very cool action, especially the bus driver.

Most police seem pretty useless (at best) when it comes to enforcing cycling safety laws, but looks like Bethlehem PD has their officers well-informed, especially considering this happened on the day the statewide "4-foot passing" law took effect.

So yeah, great to see the driver got what he deserved.

More details on the Bethlehem PD blog.

Got to say, law or no law protecting me, I would NEVER ride on that stretch of road. (it was obvious from the other cars, that if the lead driver darts into the left lane to avoid the cyclist, the next driver has little time to react)

Yay bus drivers and honest citizens who aren't afraid to get involved. Maybe Mr. Hitenrun will lose his license for a while and have to commute by bicycle. I'd pay to see that.

I'd be hauling some major ass if I ever had to cycle over that bridge.

Totally awesome bus driver, but that's a terrible stretch of road to ever consider riding on.

That is a bad bridge to be riding across. I know many riders advocate "taking the lane" like that guy but I consider it rude slowing traffic like he did.

Thanks for saying aloud what my Fred-Savage, Wonder-Years inner monologue was screaming. That bus driver is indeed a great citizen, but who let the A&S-patient slip out of the asylum?
Any white coats in the neighborhood to scootch him back in there?

Why the hell is he riding on that road? I mean, is the pedestrian lane closed to bicycles (the blog post doesn't make mention of it)? I'm angry ass biker, and I don't think I'd go over that unless I had eyes in the back of my head and a gun.

I gotta agree.

That would be the absolute worst road you can bike on. The hit and run is feliny stuff but i fault the cyclist in their own right for being there. No shoulder and no exit routes for cars AND high speed traffic.

I love to hammer but i would walk or roll the bike across that stretch on the separated path. Its clearly so hazardous they even wall off the peds.

Cyclists on roads like that give us all a bad name.

Was he taking one lane or both lanes? Good grief.

Holy reflexes on that bus driver! I hope that biker takes him out to dinner a few times.

this bridge connects two surface streets with low speed limits. You have to ride across a bridge somewhere and this is the best one. There is no reason to speed across the bridge, and the cars speeding across it are doing so illegally. I ride across this bridge fairly often. I can't believe the "giving us a bad name" nonsense. There is no good reason for this bridge to even be 4 lane, and it's purpose could be met with only one travel lane each way. It's not like this is taking massive traffic volumes. People are just idiots when they get behind the wheel, if there is open road they want to go fast. Why aren't the speeding reckless motorists giving motorists a bad name?

Nice to see that the other car blocked the offender in from behind.

Too far to the left (center) of the lane for my taste. It's OK to leave some 20-30 cm on your right, just in case, or as a cushion space when a long truck starts overtaking you at 2 cm distance, but riding more to the left/centre of the lane is too much.

Despite your claims the video shows otherwise.

No less than 4 cars and a friggin bus are on the bridge while he is. In fact i thought he was goibg to get clipped by the first passing truck. Even when cars pass, its obvious it is so dangerous that its luck that the car behind has enough time to slow before killing hom.

At least during the time the vid was shot that is a horrible road for cyclists and you are asking to be hit by riding on it then.

Well done on the part of the bus driver, that was a hit and run regardless of whether the cyclist was doing the right thing or not. Now looking at that bridge I would probably not venture on it but if I were to cross it I would stay to my right and give cars as much room as possible to avoid them having to veer out into the next lane, that way I'd avoid motorists having to make quick turns around me and create a hazard for the motorist directly behind.

I don't disagree but as a cyclist I plan for what is vs what should be and the fact is that there are lots of careless and distracted motorists out there so I do my best to stay out of their way for my own benefit. I'm not trying to blame the cyclists because he was following the rules but in my experience is that you can never assume motorists are following the rules. Think of the speed limit alone, how many drivers ever follow the speed limit? If it's a 25-35 mph limit you can assume they're going to be going 40 mph unless there's strong enforcement.

Hit and run of any kind (upon conviction) should be automatic 5 year DL suspension for first offense, permanent for second.

Precisely my view on it. It doesn't matter who is right or wrong if you end up dead. You still have to look out for yourself.
