Took the $50 ‘88 Specialized Sirrus for an out-and-back to scenic Hodges, SC this morning.
Gravel + bike does NOT equal gravelbike in this case!
The obligatory full-on drive side photo
Coming in from the Due West/Abbeville Highway, with the bike leaning against the old People’s Bank.
Right before I took the last picture my 22-year-old Diadora cycling shoe’s sole popped loose; it flopped from the back of the cleat to the heel. I rode home and glued it back together for tomorrow’s ride.

Had a spoke failure at the nipple when about 5 miles into Friday's ride (Colnago). I bent it a little bit so as to trap it between a couple neighboring spokes. Got home safely at very low speed; this is a 32H wheelset and the lost spoke gave the rear wheel a good bend. Once home I switched out to the Davidson and got my 30 for the day. I figured I'd drop off the wheel today and get the spoke replaced/wheel trued.
I wish.

In my continuing effort to seek out new routes, I headed out for a new-to-me route including the climb up Snake Road in the Oakland/Montclair hills. I went down Snake Road for the first time last week. The road condition leaves a lot to be desired, with a combination of potholes and long crevices on a curvy downhill. However, the road condition isn't as much of an issue when going up. It's only a 2.5 mile & 800'--steep at the bottom but leveling out for the last mile. Snake Rd. is right in the middle of other connecting roads I ride often, so I definitely foresee adding this stretch of road to my regular routes. After making it up to Grizzley Peak via Snake Road, I made my way back to Berkeley along the ridgeline with gorgeous views of the SF Bay today, before a final photo stop at the Berkeley Rose Garden. Total 24 miles and 2,521' elevation gain.
A couple of views from the East Bay hills with the Golden Gate Bridge and SF in the distance. There were some nice (shadow?) patterns in the bay today.

Just a handful of raindrops on today's ride through the cow country of West Marin and Sonoma counties.
The fanciful metal sculptures were at the entrance to a very fancy organic farm.
The rabbit on the scooter was all show and no go: He refused to race me, claimed I moved too much like a tortoise who once made a fool out of him.
71 miles, 4,300 feet of climbing.

Took a nice 10 mile or so ride just outside Fairplay on CR 14 found a nice short trail only about a mile that I haven't road before. Some really great wild flowers including some rare white ghost poppies.

Schwinn Collegiate on Capital Crescent Trail
This past Saturday morning I took my $25 Philly bike co-op 1969 Schwinn Collegiate 5-speed from Bethesda to Foggy Bottom and back via the Capital Crescent Trail! Total of 16.2 miles. 7:30 to 9 am. Got some nice views of Rosslyn, the Key Bridge, Dalecarlia Tunnel, and Neal Potter Plaza.
Sadly I am too green to post photos or links directly. Check out my Google Photos album below.
https : // photos.app.goo.gl / zLppXHjYXCHRiYQ89
Next time I will try biking all the way to the National Arboretum and probably take the Metro back to Bethesda. The W&OD and Mt. Vernon Trail are in my future too
Any fellow DC bikers?

Very nice riding weather today got to take my recently repaired with cheap thrift sore parts single speed trainer out for local ride on back roads and trails around Fairplay.. For a old lower end restro moded single speed the Nishiki still rides great.

Beautiful day for a ride. Could have done without the staple in the tire though.

Different bike, opposite wheel - but still another spoke breakage:
On the plus side, I got home with no real problems as the rim hardly went out of true, but since it broke mid-span, it tinked against the inside fork leg every once in awhile to remind me the front wheel was compromised
Apres-ride, on my way back from grocery shopping, I finally got a photo of the elusive beaver that's been causing some much mayhem to the saplings along our local stream:

We've had a string of days with temps in the early 90s, but a cold front finally came through, so I did 60 miles up into Lake County.
About 7 miles into the ride, I hit some glass. I stopped to clean the tire and noticed that there were two bare spots. Over 2.2K miles on this one, so I guess I'm due. Decided to continue, but lay off any "hi-G" maneuvers.
Decided to head down the always beautiful Telegraph road.
Pretty quiet, except for the occasional dummkopf over-revving their Porsche.
Saw a doe with 2 fawns. One of the fawns literally high-tailed it into the woods before I could snap a pic.
Wildflowers along the high-tension lines are blooming like crazy this year. The Purple Coneflowers are numerous.
Bike pic with a crumbling base of an electric rail tower.

@Drillium Dude Bummer about the spoke breakage. Unusual place for a break, especially on a front wheel. I wonder if the spoke had somehow been damaged or gouged on the side beforehand. Next time you can twist the remaining spoke around an adjacent spoke to prevent it from smacking the fork. As a Clyde who rides light race wheels, I typically bring a spoke wrench just in case of in-ride adjustments, plus it doubles as a valve core remover in case I need to add sealant.

Gorgeous day for a ride here with temps in the 70s. Got 56 miles in with a ride out to Tunkhannock, PA. This guy wished me luck as I headed out.
Had to stop for a shot here. The Susquehanna as I crossed the Rt. 92 bridge.
Time for a pit stop. Wonderful place!

Today was an emotional day. I received news last night that a dear old friend and former cycling teammate, John Mutolo, died unexpectedly in a tragic hiking accident the other day. John and I raced together during our high school years. He was only 48. John was an amazing person. He was kind and generous, always enjoyed a laugh, goofing around with friends, and had a zest for life. I can still picture him giving the hang loose sign and shouting, "Yeah, buddy!--one of his oft-repeated catchphrases. He was also a loving son and a tremendous older brother to his kid sister. On top of that, John was also truly an exceptional cyclist, the most naturally talented cyclist I've ever known. His first love was mountain biking but he also trained and raced road bikes. I truly believe he had the talent to compete in the Tour de France, or any other World Tour caliber races. He'd often show up to our fast-paced club ride on a MTB and dust us all. He won the Junior World MTB Championship in Italy before I left for college. Then a few months later, he had a devastating crash during a downhill MTB race in Vail, CO, fractured his skull and spent 5 days in a coma. I did not keep close contact with him after college, but I know he suffered from brain trauma and was never the same rider or person afterward. He's been on my mind all day, and I've shed quite a few tears. When John got a newer Parkpre Team 925 MTB, I ended up with his original Team Parkpre MTB, which I still own today. It was only fitting that I took out John's old MTB and hit the trails in his honor today.
