Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Funny, I told Lily about how I know I will be bored at some resort on the beach plus we are going to the ObX for a week in July. I mention California and road tripping a little bit, mainly fly into San Fran, drive down to Half Moon Bay. Then head over to the red wood forest. She said that sounds expensive.

To me that sounds cheaper than going to the caribbean and watching people drink. What do I know.
Yes, cheaper and much cooler in August. The coast south of SF is beautiful, but north will be less crowded.

...you can easily get down as far as Half Moon Bay, but the coast highway doesn't start to get really spectacular until you get down toward Big Sur. It's still closed from a washout at Paul's Slide, but by August it might very well be open again, assuming it doesn't wash out again this winter some place else. Used to be some deal where there were nights you could get in, to use the nekkid hippie hot springs at Esalen. But I don't know the current policies. Or I guess you could book a seek long workshop at Esalen for some sort of couples bonding.

That is a pretty fine experience. On the 1-10 scale of life, it's at least a 9.

Half Moon Bay is not the place it once was. There are a lot more houses built there now, than when I first moved to California. I don't know where all those people work, but they're not commercial fishermen.

I went back in 06 and have good memories of it. I really wanted to live in Santa Cruz back in the day.

Wife has never been to California. I think her head would explode.

We've done a few Big Sur trips, and always had fun. Can be as expensive as you want to make it. Or not expensive.

A trip starting at the Muir Woods and going through San Fransisco, Monterey, Carmel, and Big Sur would be a great trip. Hwy 1 is closed in one place, but you should be able to work around that. Julia Pfeifer Park is a great place to hike and clamp with some fantastic views.

Lots to do on a trip like that.

Absolutely love coastal CA north of LA.

Going nearby in a boat doesn't count.

Im glad you brought up vacationing. We’ve been on the fence about where to go in May for our anniversary. You got me talking about it at dinner, and we made a decision.

It was down to northern Italy and Switzerland, or the islands. Decided on 5 days on Palm Island in the Grenadines and 5 days on St. Lucia.

I don't have much experience with resorts, but we wandered into a place in the Dominican Republic when we were just looking for rooms. The clientele was 100% Italian and beautiful, but they let us stay at a great price. The food was very simple, but very good. Lots of grilled vegetables and local fish.

We were with LSS's mother who was an Episcopalian nun at the time and stationed at a mission nearby. We almost talked her into walking down the tops-optional beach in her habit the last day we were there.
What are your dive spots in Belize?

Hol Chan/Shark Alley is one of our favorites. Haven’t been to the Blue Hole.

CA boy at heart here, grew up in San Diego, but know the state fairly comprehensively from family and school (Humboldt State redwoods). I don't know the upper east corner (Lassen/Shasta) but would love to go some day - especially to check out the volcanic activity. I used to be a geology major before switching to chemistry.

bampilot06 if you love mountains I would absolutely recommend a trip up hwy 395 to check out the high Sierra. I love mountains and I love the Sierra dearly. Didn't you mention that your wife is getting into some running? Some epic hikes up there. I grew up checking various Alpine ranges since my dad was a Sierra mountaineer. I try to go most years in my cycling off season to backpack and grab some peaks.

But the aforementioned central/northern coast trips are totally worth it, too. My state is a diverse geographical paradise with lots to explore and many climates.

Less than 10% of people going to the Grand Canyon ever go below the rim, but they still go to the Grand Canyon.

I haven’t been there in 20 years and I’m not great matching names to places, but it’s all beautiful. I have been down the Blue Hole twice. It’s dark and cold and full of sharks and you can’t spend much time there. The nitrogen narcosis was the most enjoyable part for me. Shark-Ray Alley is better for snorkeling as I remember it.

The Alley is good for snorkeling unless you got on the offshore side of the reef.

And you don’t have to go far to get into the redwoods. Muir Woods just north of the Golden Gate, or several nice groves a few miles south of Half Moon Bay.

Our campsite in Memorial Park, near Pescadero. Last summer.
