How much do you think they weigh?

I just got a new bike scale. Might as well have some fun with it. I'll post the answers tomorrow.

1974 Peugeot PA10 (Carbolite 103 tubing)

1974 Peugeot PX10

A Carton frame built in 1959 with a Raleigh Competition fork and a new aluminum SA 3 speed hub. The fenders are aluminum.

Dirtdrop,

What stem are you using on your 74 Pug. Is it a Nitto Technomic Deluxe or just a Technomic?

Well I won't feel so bad about my bikes if you are right. It's really hard to nail down the weight of a bike - my Giro d'Italia went from 22-lbs to 25-lbs, give or take, when I changed from Fiamme Red Label tubular rims, sew-ups and a UnicaNitor saddle to Rigida AL1622 rims, 700x28C Panaracer Pasela TG tires, and a Brooks Team Professional. Nothing that would be particularly obvious. I weighed the complete wheel/tire combination on a postal scale and each wheel was 420g heavier. That's almost a pound each.

PA10 - 24 pounds... The Stronglight probably knocked a pound off the stock weight and I am guessing the Brooks is similar to the stock saddle.

PX10 - 21.4 pounds... just a speck heavier than stock.

Carlton - 29 pounds as I bet that frame and fork are very light.

Carlton is 24.5

PX10 is about 22.5

The carbolite looks like it has sew ups...So its probably lighter than we think I guess 22.5

Here are the results:

The PA10 is the lightest at 23.61 lbs. The tubular wheels are very light and it has only five speeds. Maybe Carbolite 103 isn't such bad stuff? I'll never call it gaspipe again.

The PX10 weighs 24.29 lbs. How did it get there from the claimed weight of 21.5? The wheels are clinchers with wire bead tires. With the exception of the seatpost, I think all of the I think all of the Italian components are a little heavier than the French ones they replaced. The T.A. pedals are heavier than the Lyotards were. The Brooks saddle is definitely heavier than the plastic Ideale 2001. There's also all that clearcoat.

The Carlton weighs 25.57 lbs. Sure, the hub weighs over 2 lbs, but there's no derailers, no freewheel and just one chainring. The frame is double butted Reynolds 531. I could knock off some more weight with a lighter saddle and seatpost, but I like it the way it is.

I've still got a Fuji Mixte, a Bridgestone MB2 and a Gitane Tour de France to weigh and I'll post them this weekend.

Jeez I wasn't too far off except for the PX10. That's exactly what happened to my Giro d'Italia. It's a pig now.

I almost nailed the PA which is closer to stock than the rest of the bikes... the cottered to cotterless usually equals a -1 when you do it.

The PX 10 was a 21 pound bike (stock) with a leather saddle so those Italian parts must be really beefy.

I am impressed with the Carlton as 25.5 is really light for any bike with an IGH.

I like the guess the weight game.
