Unobtainium medal: 3,000+ miles
Conservative estimated mileage YTD is 3360 (I commute 120-150 miles a week year round; 120/week = 480/month x 7 = 3360)

I bike commuted for the first time on 3/1/10 and have only used an alternative to cycling 4 times so far... (and 5ish days off) so that's more than 100 for me so far, with plans to continue to the end of the year. My miles commuted will be fairly low since I have such a short trip... Platinum/Copper sounds kind of lame though can I count non-commuting miles?

Bike ≠ Car ≠ Ped.
I just realized that I have no clue what my real mileage is. My main commuter bike doesn't have a computer.
And, after all this time, it's still supposed to be spelled "MEDAL".

Platinum here since I commute every day, although my commute is a short 3 miles hahaha.
Real mileage comes from the bike path near work!

For shorter commutes, the number of days counts as much as distance. It's choose which gives you the best metal medal.
I'm still amazed how so many of you can get in so many days riding. What are your tricks for handling bad weather and the offsite meeting that you have to drive to?

for the last three months, I've missed three days in May and three days in June, and rode every day in July. We had a rainy June, but overall only six days with strong rain (strong enough for me to get my rain gear out) since May 1. And I am in Chicago, certainly not the driest place around. I don't have off-site meetings, but once my kid goes back to school, I probably have to drive once a week to pick her up.

55 commute days, 1039 miles. I'm on track for gold, miles-wise, but # of days I may not even break bronze. Didn't start this year until mid-March, and was pretty spotty until late April.

Since I've been in Calgary (November 2009) I've been on foot for my 1.8 kilometer (~1 mi) each way commute to work, 5 days a week. So, as a pedestrian I am on track for platinum on days and silver on mileage.
Oh, and yeah. One earns a MEDAL made of some kind of METAL

why not a more difficult rating?
The product of:
total mileage in 2010 * avg speed while commuting * age of rider * avg weight of bike
you get a diamond "medal" if over 2e8

That is tough! For 2010, I'm currently at 1.2e8, assuming units are miles, miles per hour, years, and pounds. Also assuming weight of bike includes assessories (fenders, racks, bags) but NOT the rider.

Would you guys stop meddling around? Sorry if that was already used as I did not read all posts.
Is the poll for expected total in 2010 or to date?

I am bummed that it is possible my last 5 day riding week was May and my next won't be until September. I am between 2 and 3k miles on the year though.

144.5 days commuting so far this year.........3,122.8 miles
I track a lot of "dumb" statistics
144.5 days equals 289 trips.....131 with a headwind, 25 with a sidewind and 37 with a tailwind....balance of 96 with no wind.........25 trips were in the rain and 47 so far have been in temps above 90 degrees, 5 were in the '30's, 19 were in the '40's.

Do I get credit for hauling 2 kids with me most days. :-P
Maybe the medals should be renamed. Alu, Steel, Ti, and Carbon Fiber.

What about a medal for percent commutes biked? I've biked my commute every day that I've worked so far this year, as well as last year.

Slowroller.
Well that's an interesting idea for 2011. I didn't think of the telecommuters who only go into the office some days of the week. Thank you for the suggestion.
Brontide,
There was some discussion early on about "metal" versus "medal". This post was about a metal medal, so CF is out. Besides TI would be top above CF if it were included. Only disadvantages of TI are 1) cost and 2) some limitations on aero designs. My thinking is #2 is side effect of #1. Because it's expensive there has not been as much engineering work.

Actually, I'm not even a telecommuter--I just bike commute five days a week, every week of the month, barring holidays and vacation/personal leave days. Of course, that's a lot easier here in the SF Bay Area where the weather never gets treacherous. But, still, 100% commutes biked for the last year and half! Oftentimes, the biking is the best part of my day
