Hole 'Nuther Thang...

Yours was built in 1973. Those holes in that configuration define it as among the first of the Cinelli "Mod.B"s made in Mexico. (Cinelli discontinued production of the Mod. B in Italy coincidentally.) Cinelli SCs of these years also had holes, a different number in a different configuration.

Suspect @fishboat's 7XXX serial reflects a '77 build, though he purchased it in '79,

Collected many serials and pestered many original owners of Acer-Mex Windsor and Carabela Pros for photos of the underside of their bottom bracket shells to build a modest database which seems to support the hypothesis that the first digit of the serial is the last digit of 197X.

(Currently working on a 1973 Acer-Mex Carabela Pro with a serial of 3397
Stripped to chrome and bare metal, but with headset cups intact, the Frame and Fork weighs in at 2294 grams. Tubing is Columbus by dint of dove in an oval and lettering on underside of downtube.)

Now if you could Please post additional photos of frame details..?

And is your steerer tube "rifled?" Are the dropouts Campagnolo?

I have a 1972 sn 1837. It has the holes on the BB shell like yours, no braze ons for water bottle or cable guides. I bought the bike from a bike mechanic in San Luis Obispo Cal. who bought it from the original owner. The bike was raced quite a bit according to the guy I bought it from. I love the way it rides and , although the paint is a bit chipped up, I plan to keep it the way it came. The original owner put Phil hubs on Super Champion 700c clinchers.

Windsor Pro, 25” frame

I just noticed, since someone commented on seat angle, the saddle and it is just like the one I found for mine. I had been using an uncovered pre-Cinelli UnicaNitor. Mine has the same Windsor logo as my Jersey.

Not too surprising. They are Cinelli copies, after all, and Cinellis were not exactly weight-weenie-ish. Especially the big ones, built as they were with what Columbus eventually called "SP."

Thanks for the photo - a good looking fellow!

wrt saddle -

do not know what you intend by the phrase "pre-Cinelli UnicaNitor"

Nitor and Unicanitor names were Cinelli products from their inception ca. 1960

a Windsor marked example likely would have been a "UnicaMex"

have always assumed the Mexico produced ones to be licensed but have no hard information - could easily be mistaken, they are close to the original unlike some of the horrible copies such as Freccia D'Oro

I have never weighed mine . It is certainly not as light as my Colnago at 21.5 lbs. in a large frame(without pedals) . I just rode my Windsor the other day at lunch and it is well balanced and a joy to ride. I don’t think the build quality was as consistent as it’s Italian look alike. I have never ridden a Cinelli but I don’t think they had the issues that Windsor had. Mine, after surviving the less than ideal conditions that it obviously has for fifty years, is probably ok.

I have two uncovered saddles that are the same except one has Cinelli and the other does not. The unbranded one was given to me by its original owner who raced in the early seventies and that’s what he called it,noting the lack of branding on the underside. He claimed it was the lightest saddle available at the time , I dunno if that’s true but they are very light , but as an old guy , I can tell you , you better have some padding on your backside if you plan on riding very far.

the cap and I live about a half mile apart. I visit him every few months to donate parts to the Silicon Valley Bike Exchange. With so few acer-mex bikes around it is odd that we both refurbished one this year.

Looks great.

I wish whoever restored my wife's Windsor had painted it a bright red like that, instead of a darker 'Rosso' red.

I hope the ride goes well. If it is anything like the first time I rode mine , I’m sure you will be smiling. I think my first “shakedown” after doing minor personal adjustments to the bike, was about 35 miles and I wanted to keep riding. It climbed well, controlled downhills and corners , and the flat road riding was very comfy. There is very little , if any , flex to the frame even at 25” , look at the beefy stays on them!

I did the checkout ride yesterday. It needed a few adjustments, but it handled well for what the ride I did. I made the adjustments after the ride and will continue to evaluate. I'd like to push it a bit a try some "sprinters hills" and some descents on it.

hello from Cap'n Jonny

The Windsor is still for sale at the Silicon Valley Bicycle Exchange ( bikex.org). I have done quite a few resto's since then including a pair of Gitanes ,Peugeots, and Schwinn Continentals among others. I just received the decals for the 85 Pinarello and the 58 Lenton and as soon as I put the 1966 purple Schwinn Continental back together I will apply them. Anyone know where I can get the purple translucent bar tape that is on the Schwinn. The tape on there is a little ragged.

IIRC that handlebar tape was contract supplied by Hunt Wilde

BTW -

in case you will be doing additional searching for the tape the Schwinn term for the colour is violet rather than purple

you will likely get more hits using that...

I rode the Windsor on the Vintage Bike Ride up here on the Peninsula yesterday. I really liked the ride, but, I also knew the bike was on the small side. Even with a long stem and the seat way back it isn't going to be my ride of choice. I'll probably strip it next weekend and put the pieces on the Paramount that was photo-bombing in some of the pictures.
