Me thinks we have discovered the guy who lubed Tom's bike for his wolf country tour.

And here I thought vaseline helps to open things.

I'd use butter before I'd use Vasoline

Yeah, better vaseline than butter. But this is better than vaseline.

Show your bike you care.

Butter? Are you serious?

If your experimenting I'd guess that Chap stick would work better, lol.

Or how about some 45SPF lotion to keep the UV off your bike?

one drop of anchovy oil will result in a perfectly lubricated bicycle for your entire life

(10 pts if you get the reference)

on the serious side, i lubed my hub bearings with vaseline previously, and it worked perfectly fine.

Nah, I'd rather eat anchovies while they're not extinct.

In case you were not joking about the butter thing, there are several reasons not to use vegetable oils or animal fats for bicycle lubrication. First they are biological products. Biological products, with the exception of a material called lignin, are meant to be eaten by something. Whether that something is a 1000lb polar bear or a microorganisms, something is going to eat it. That means that it can go bad and smell bad and make it even yummier for something to eat it. Butter will, as some one else pointed out, go rancid. When it does that if forms butric acid which is particularly smelly.

Biological products don't lubricate very well either. It has to do with that biological aspect again. Because it's meant to be digested, it's more water soluble so it washes out easily, it also doesn't have the long chains that make petroleum greases so good at making stuff slide well.

Use a petroleum based grease. Your bike won't sell like a bad prono theater, it won't squeak as much and you won't have polar bears following you around

In a pinch i've used paintball gun oil. Lubes pretty well but gets nasty after several miles. I think i'd ride it dry rather than put food products in it though.

How about Bag Balm? Then you would need only buy one product for both your shorts and chain.
