Purpose-built racing bikes are built stiff through the bottom of the diamond to hold the wheels in plane as the rider's power is pumped in through the pedals. Purpose-built touring bikes are additionally built stiff through the top of the diamond to hold the wheels in plane against the twisting/bending forces of the load cantilevered off the frame on the racks.

Sounds about right - I've ridden almost 10,000 miles this year and spent a little less than $200 (not counting food). Oh, his is the other way around; never mind.
