Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Ever unclipped your left foot and leaned to the right? Yeah, I did.

I never fell down when i learned as a youngster, had some close calls though.

But then a month or so ago I thought to myself that i'd unclip my left foot for some reason instead of my right (habit) and my muscles didn't cooperate. They'd so seldom unclipped the left that I plopped right over a the light IN FRONT of my own street (how's that for timing on a 35 mile ride?)

Lesson - use the dominant foot and just stick with it if it works.

One day, after riding clipless for about six months or so, I tried to unclip from a non-clipless pedal.

It was an accelerator pedal.

I don't have a trainer. I fell at a red light because I didnt unclip in time, I fell at the same light after getting one foot in and then leaning too much on that side, and then I fell a few times infront of my house on this ramp that have to go up but I always so up as slow as possible. I went a slow as possible, accidentally came to complete stop and fell to my side.

Today my chain jumped off when I went to the small front ring on a climb. This happens very infrequently but I was mentally prepared for it and had both feet unclipped before I even started to slow down. Im getting better with these things.

It happens. Less often. But keep 'em lubricated. I once fell over in front of a busload of seniors at a remote highway pulloff. I'd been riding for days in the rain and my SPD pedals had rusted.

Or to solve this problem, you can use cleats and toe clips.

Then you just have to push a little latch on your foot to pull out.
