Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? We are getting soft...As for me, give me a fixed gear!"-- Henri Desgrange (31 January 1865 - 16 August 1940)

I finally decided to change out the chain. Post change-out, the drivetrain was VERY noisy, much noisier than with the old chain. By adjusting the angle of the wheel I could get it to ride smooth, as long as I didn't put too much oomph into it. But when I started out or climbed a hill, the noise was nasty; sounded like I was dragging the chain across the chain stay.

So I decided to change out the cog too. At first blush the old cog didn't look so bad:

Bun then I flipped it over:

Wow, that's a lot of missing material!

With the new cog everything sounds beautiful.

In my case, if the new chain is noisier than the old one, you just *might* need a new cog.

It has been a year since I got my fixed gear bike and the chain doesn't feel any different than the new fixed gear bike I just bought this week. The only difference is that the old chain is louder when I am braking by back pedaling. Scares some people lol and I love it. I also rode this bike on quite a few "surprise" rain rides and also it probably accounted for 1/5th of my winter rides. I dried, lubed, and cleaned the chain when it was needed or if I saw the smallest bit of rust which by the way went away.

I use an 1/8 inch Wippermann track chain. I ride 3500-4000 miles a year. I clean (occasionally) and lube with Prolink. Iʻve been using the same chain since 2007 with less than 1/64 inch stretch. Cog and chainring look nice too.
