Generally, no*. An English BB will be designed for a 68mm wide bottom bracket shell, while Italian BB shells are 70mm wide. Your English spindle would be a couple mm shy of proper length. You'd probably be better off just angling to swap your complete English BB for a similar Italian BB.

Lookin' for a French-threaded Atom 77 compact 6-speed with a 30t large cog (or 32t, if such a thing exists...), or comparable French-threaded 6-speed/30t that would work with a 120mm or 126mm rear hub. Thx

I am green with envy every time I read references to a "local co-op"..... There ain't really even a half-decent LBS near me! Sounds like assembling what I want from and English & a French FW is the way to go. That'd be fantastic if the 14-32 is still at your co-op!

In a pinch, you can route a short section of housing under the BB from the cable stop (or bypass the stop completely), just terminate it as it heads up toward the FD. Friction and cable tension will keep it in place. I did that on my Gitane TdF and it worked perfectly.

The main thing I'm looking for is a set of derailleurs for an '83 Holdsworth Professional. So Campy Super Record is probably most appropriate, but also the most $$$ so I might go with 80s vintage Dura Ace or Superbe depending upon what I find that looks right and is a reasonably good deal.
