For those of you who regularly replace pads while out on a ride, have you ever lost both front and rear at the same time? I like to be prepared but hesitate to load up with a set of pads and associated tools. I think I could get home with one operable brake.

Surely someone here is a beside-the-road pad swapper, else why the angst?

Well heck, I might have been able to help the next time you needed to remove a cotter pin.

I'm on my same brake pads and rotors for almost 4 years now, riding a mountain bike in the suburbs for about 16 miles a day. Things last "forever"...

When I do a lot of descending with my mtb I replace the pads about twice per year. It's 5 years old and the rear rotor has worn down past the "safe" limit twice and the front has once.

On the rim braked road bike I replace the pads on the rear about once per year, maybe a year and a half. Front pads last a bit longer. Wore through a rear rim 2 years ago and due for another due to hitting a pothole and bending the brake track.

HA! My rim brakes have never squealed. Even with brand new pads. However, I do so enjoy reading the plethora of disc brake squealing threads, and chuckling to myself…Who pays money to true wheels, anyway?

Let's replace "squeal" with "rub"...

Because admittedly, I 90% rubbing alcohol wipe my disc brakes before every ride to prevent "squeal".

Because there are no cases of disc brakes rubbing, right?

So is your problem with alloy rims, or rim brakes?

Carry on.

Cool. I don’t need to do anything to my brakes before a ride.

A disc brake rub is magnitudes less of a problem then a rim brake rub. And cool, you don't have to do anything to your brakes before a ride. I'm just doing what works for me currently...

Can you open your calipers at all while riding to alleviate rubbing?

I don't feel like answering your questions. My point: I like disc brakes WAY more than rim brakes....

You should take it as, "The OP was talking about brake PADS, not rim brakes, but you decided to take over the conversation and turn it into whatever YOU wanted it to be..."

’Cause I’m just that good!

All I said was I’ll never have to worry about replacing my brake pads on the road. Which is true. Sorry!

No it's not. It's about dealing with cotter pins in the field, as I made clear earlier.

Huh. Maybe that should have been the thread title, instead of calling it “Changing Brake Pads in the Field.”
My “bad.”
