Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

No, the area that I live is very cycling unfriendly. I very rarely ever ride from my house. Commuting to work would get me killed.

Lucky enough to have a commute that is 75% residential streets. Started commuting today and hoping to commute at least twice a week. 14 miles round trip so not a lot of miles, but it's something.

Today is my third time commuting to work this week, 28 miles round trip. I've been upping my miles every week, still nothing spectacular and my longest ride still is around 28 miles. For awhile, I was doing awesome, my average speed was nearing 18mph (remember I'm fat and just started riding in March) and I was getting PRs left and right. I'm still getting a fair share of PRs on certain segments, but my legs are broken. Today, I averaged 14.1mph on my commute in. Stupid wind. It seems every morning I have a headwind out of the SE and on my way home I have it in the opposite direction.

I guess I shouldn't complain, I've dropped a pants size and lost 30+ lbs since starting but I wish my speed was still nearing 18-19 rather than dropping.

Now that most of the heavy lifting of the yard work is done, I might actually get to ride my bike again... maybe...

Longest ride I've ever done https://app.strava.com/activities/54886819 I'm particularly happy with my pace (*cough* average speed *cough*). There wasn't a ton of elevation gain, but I wasn't trying for that either. Beautiful day for a ride too, some light cloud cover to keep it from getting too hot, and a light breeze every once in a while, but nothing hard.

I got some energy this weekend and built up that neo-Moto frame that has been laying around in my garage. I installed the new Microshift levers and boy oh boy do they shift sweet. Head and shoulders improvement over the Forte/re-badged levers from two years ago. No exaggeration that they shift tighter than my 5700 and quieter than the old Microshift.

I will post pics of the bike as soon as I swap the seatpost and saddle to make this a black and green super commuter. Having not ridden steel since the 8th grade, I am here to tell you that I now understand why Steelies are so loyal to their frame material.

Do not overlook Microshift, my friends.

Rode this to work this morning. Unfortunately, it will be heading to Craigslist - too small. I was looking so forward to making this fit, but even with a flipped stem it is too small. It is a sweet and smooth ride and it has helped me develop a new love of the steel fork.

I actually felt good on the bike yesterday evening, finally! I rode three climbs, pr'd two of them and only one second off my best time on the third. I can live with that!

So new to this thead but want to give you guys some mileage I've been riding.

Apr22 - Apr28: 125 miles
Apr29 - May5: 102 miles
May6 - May12: 89 miles
May13 - May 14: 113 miles

I dont track my commuting miles but log between 10-25 riding back and from work and not included in the above numbers. Commuting miles depend on away from hom travel time and after work dinners. I have none scheduled this week so should be able to log close 200 miles this week. Let see if I can deliver on it.

Wt check 179 (goal 170)

I happen to ride a 56 and love the color. How much you selling it for?

I think with shipping it would be too much for what it is. I got the full bike off of Bike Island, which is part of the Bikes Direct family. It was 'slightly scuffed on the crank and drop outs', but there was no indication of this when I received the bike. It was only $259, and with upgrades is probably worth $500. I do not see it on Bike Island, but here is the Bikes Direct link.

Removed/Replaced/Swapped:

Downtube shifters
Brake levers
long stem
8 speed rear derailleur
Wheels
Interruptor brake levers
Seatpost
Saddle

LOL, it would have been easier to list what you DIDN'T swap out.

It is now 10° cooler than it was when I rode in to work at 5:30 this morning. The rain is borderline sleet. It's May 23, people. We are not amused.

Decent, if unexceptional week for me: 172mi, weight around the same. Think I'll be dropping off 2nd spot pretty soon! I keep forgetting to take photos, but on yesterday's easy run we went to watch a local cat 3/4 race. Here's a bit of video I took as the bunch was passing. Scott, the eventual winner, can be seen 3 from back on a Cipollini bike. Incidentally, this is the exact point of my crash back in April.
