Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I was riding my 1972 Windsor Pro and a couple of young guys yelled at me . “Nice Windsor” I was surprised they knew the bike as young as they were.

Yesterday some guy in a truck asked me if I wanted to race. He was being friendly about it though and not a asswipe.

I’ve had a fair number of leathered-out Harley riders wave at me over the years. I seldom get waves from the guys riding the crotch rockets tho’.

(Perhaps the Harley guys, the second-slowest set of two wheels on the road, are just sharing a wave of sympathy...? )

Lots of waves and encouragement when riding my touring bike fully loaded. Not so much on my regular road bike. Those who do are likely also cyclists.

I was riding up a steep incline (slowly. I have girth.) in a secluded neighborhood one morning. A grey sedan was coming towards me, and slowed down just as we crossed paths. A middle aged white lady with brown hair in a pony tail, wearing a grey hoodie rolled down the window.

"OH... YEAH!..." she shouted. I ignored her. Her words echo in the trees, and between the houses.

"YOU MARRIED??" I continue pedaling, and ignoring. "Yes, I AM married." I think. My glove conceals my ring. I continue pedaling.

"I'D DO THAT RIGHT NOW!!"

The reverberations die down. I only hear my chain and cogs and blood and breath.

She drives away.

The few times I've had positive things yelled at me still stick in my mind as little triumphs along the way. It doesn't happen often. But it feels good.

I don't recall anyone hollering positive things at me when I'm riding. However, when a driver is giving me a hard time, I like to smile, wave, and say "Have a nice day!".

Or just the general distance, at the Boilermaker in Utica, NY there are spectators along the entire 15k route. 3 miles in they’re telling everyone “almost there”
