I was offered free boxes and packing materials from the local shop in upstate NY. Trek shop quoted $80 for breakdown/packing - local shop quoted $60 for breakdown/packing. Shop in San Pedro, CA If I remember correctly quoted $75. As others have said shipping seems to be affected more by box size than anything else, the smaller you can get the box the better.
BikeFlights has limits on all 3 specs and the total as well, damned if you do and.....

I found that Bikeflights has a hard limit on cost at 8" wide, I went to ship a bike that was at 9" at it was double what it was at 8". Needless to say, I cut that down to 8" quickly

Add me to the list of folks that don't think packing and shipping a bike makes much sense, at least at these prices.
Had the bike packed at the local shop and shipped with bike flights - packing was $60 shipping was just under $200 - only did it because someone else was footing the bill
Packing was done well, shipping was Rough. Bike arrived damaged. Not end of the world damaged, but not pleasant or easily remedied. Working through claim now, but timing and reality mean I will probably get screwed on this one, we will see?
Might start another thread with pics and details?

I was told this arrived without a scratch. 1. Protect surfaces. 2. Make sure nothing moves within the box. That's it, it ain't rocket science. Obviously there is nothing you can about a forklift and whatnot crushing the bike.
