I tend to just zone these people out as you really can't control them. Its sad to see him destroying lives around him, and 9 times out of 10 the best thing to do is walk away from that person.
Judge me if you will but I've been in that situation and it rarely turns out well. It usually turns into the junkee destroying those around him.

He may very well lose everything, his family, his ability to ride a bike, his life. If he can get Step 1 before that last "lose", he may have a chance. I pray that he does.
The good news is that because of this story, there's at least one cyclist in recovery who will stay sober one more day.

I think the truth is that 'once an addict, always an addict'. The difference is whether you're on drugs or not.
If you were an addict once, that one easy slip up will cause you to go right back into the spiral.

Few people choose to live such a life and those that do often would love to change but some people are just unable to change or stick to it once they do.
I always wish them the best and feel very grateful to live the life I have.

Funny how often gratitude is a topic of discussion in the rooms.

+1 - I was thinking the same thing when I heard he had gotten really serious very quickly again in cycling.

I didn't like it. Big highs if you do well, big lows if you don't, and a lot of empty space after the applause dies down. Chuck in some celebrity status and people who really don't know you wanting to be your best friend. All that throws a lot of switches that are better left alone for a while.

Very sad. I'm not going to get into the addiction debate, but I would like to commend the racing forum on how we can actually have grown up conversations. This would have gone downhill in a hurry in RC.

I think to Racer X's point Gerlach needs to sober up with a regular gig 5 days a week on a schedule like the rest of us.

Grow up. Patting yourself on the back for acting like an adult is for other forums.

"Racing is like love..."
Incorrect

incorrect.
Go to a few meetings, find out what it's about, unless you are one it is impossible to figure out.
Once you're pickled you can never be a cucumber.
It can be success or failure that takes you back into that spiral.
Once you are in the throes of it, nothing else matters-not family, not money, not tomorrow, not God.
It is an insidious disease for which there is no cure, but abstinence does stop it from being active, but the train of thought of an alcoholic/addict is still there and needs to be treated.

I think that's accurate. My family has a history of addictions and it's something that you just can't rationalize it or sum it up in a few sentences. I think that's why we struggle to figure out why someone acts this way. Like Irish Pat said, it's impossible to "figure out."

My thought with Gerlach is he was putting himself into the same mental and physical situation where he spiraled down in the first place. Avoidance isn't the complete answer either, but changing focus and developing routine, even in small measures, can help some people, especially if they have underlying depression, and from what I've seen of the guy he probably does.
This whole thread is depressing. I'm going over to make fart jokes in Form II.
