Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

The things I "learn" from Oprah

I happened to watch Oprah a few minutes ago and her topic today was about happiness.

She told everyone that according to studies, San Luis Obispo, CA is the most happiest place on earth. She then said, one of the reasons that contribute to its reputation is because of how bike-friendly the place is.

She then said, cycling makes people happy and when you are cycling, you produce endorphins, causing you to be happy.

Are you happy after/during a bike ride?

I know one thing, that If I can't bike a particular day, I'm not happy.

If you're feeling happy, you're not riding fast enough.

I haven't been riding since the onset of winter. Yes, I'm somewhat unhappy now.

I am resisting the very strong urge to snark about Oprah. She reaches a lot of people, SUV-driving moms in particular, so if just a few of her followers think twice about cyclists on the road, that's a very good thing.

Why is PCAD so cranky? He should be freaking jumping up and down and giving away Cervelo's with the amount of mileage he does!

I sure don't think it's the Happiest City in the USA and I live in San Luis Obispo...

I don't know about happy when riding but I sure am at peace. No matter if I am hitting it hard or just a relaxing ride.

I enjoy being able to ride 4 times a week and work in San Luis Obispo while the in-laws are below zero. None of my "favorite" rides are out San Luis Obispo though, except maybe climbing up Prefumo Canyon Road. I like the cycling in the northern SLO county, Paso Robles especially.

All those "best city in the world" surveys are so subjective that they're completely worthless. Like asking all of us on BF what the "best 60 mile loop in the world is."

I'm always in a great mood after riding even when it's a hard ride.

I can't tell you where it is, but I can tell you it's nowhere near where I live.
