Here's how the Shimano pods look without the lever and bolt. the part you see came from the original Simplex band. I ran a tap through it to extend the threads you see so I could use a 5mm bolt to hold it in place. A raised square on the pod keeps it from turning.

OK, trying to understand this "retrofriction" stuff here. Is "retrofriction" a Simplex only technology? What exactly is it, and how is it different from regular friction shifters?

No, not Simplex only. The best way to understand who/what of retrofriction shifters, I think, is here:

They are Mavic Retrofriction. It has been a few years since I used them but I could have swore that when pulling back on the lever you feel very fine microclicks.

That's a very good article. The little nubs on the earlier shifters shown means they are very early. I have a set that I got NOS on Ebay for $60. Sometimes you get lucky.

They may look out of place on my low end beater Jeunet, but I love that bike.

Wow, $60 is great for NOS. Not as old, and not NOS, but I got these for $70, which is pretty good, too. I see some as high as $300 (NOS).

Thanks Johnnyace for the link to Retrogrouch's blog on Simplex et.al. retrofriction shifters. I'm looking forward to using them in conjunction the Huret long cage RD and Jubilee FD that will be on my Moto Grand Record.

FWIW, I bought my Simplex NOS retrofriction bar ends just two weeks ago for $81 on ebay ... have seen sellers asking a whole lot more than that!

That's a good price if they're complete and the springs are not broken. I've read that broken springs are an issue, but hasn't happened to me. I have one spare.

Huret also made retrofriction shifters in the '70s, they were standard on the '76 through '78 Schwinn Superior: https://www.bikeforums.net/classic-vi...ion-model.html

On my wife's TdF, I found that the Retrofrictions had so much leverage when trying to move the Delrin RD that they constantly stretched the shift cable. I had to pull out slack many times before it would stay put.

As did Zeus, for a couple years before they went belly-up in the late 80s.

N.B. Huret also made a ratcheting shift lever like the SunTour "Power Shifter."

Mavic Retrofrictions are re-branded Simplex. Running them on the Vitus.

Speaking of which, I had to replace one of the leaf springs on one of the Suntour barcons on the Gitane TdF. Fortunately a friend of mine had a donor.
