We live next to a 7 acre green space which is along a highway. The highway had a gas main, my subdivision didn't. I had them come out early summer to do an estimate. They estimated the job based upon the service entrance crossing all that greenspace. I got a call from a kid I'd talked to, a gas company intern. I was an intern with a gas company as well, so there was a bond. "Dr. B, I just called to tell you that I'm heading back to school and if you want to do the job you should do it now because I'm still here and can certify the estimate. We use a different estimation tool and it would 4000 bucks if they have to re-estimate". I called the gas company up and had them send the contract, with a copy. "Why don't you sign the copies now, and then I can sign both, and you won't have to mail back a copy?" So as soon as I got the copies I signed them, making the contract effective. I got a call a week later from some other guy.
"Uh, we're just looking at this and were wondering: do you really want to do this? I mean you have a gas line in the space where kids walk to school, and ....".
"Wait a minute. Are you telling me that underground gas lines aren't safe around houses and kids?"
"uh, no."
"You just don't want to do this, right?"
"Uh, yeah".
"But we have a contract, correct?"
"Yeah"
"Let's schedule a time for this to happen then".
So it nearly did cost me big bucks. I did have to replace the hot water heater and range. But, ahem, I already had a dryer.

lol, that's a bit of a horse of a different color. If I had a contract for a killer deal on a gas line like that, I'd jump on it too, otherwise I'd be throwing away $3400. That savings paid for your water heater and range
