Scott's Drop-In bars were commercially released in 1990. They were an attempt to provide a more areodynamic riding position for use in mass start races where aero bars with arm rests were illegal. Scott claimed a wind tunnel verifed 8.7% drag reduction. They came in 42cm and 44cm widths.
Lemond used them because he had a personal sponsorship deal with Scott and was paid to use them. When he wasn't riding the inward extensions, they made an excellent billboard for the Scott logo. Scott was hoping that lightning would strike twice and that they would become just as popular as their clip-on areo bars had become after Greg's 1989 Tour De France victory. While Greg did win the 1990 Tour de France with them, their popularity was brief and not widespread.
