These threads always go the same way-- the typical "nature is my soundtrack" and "I ride to get away from distractions" responses, which are the mirror opposite of what the OP asked for. If you don't want to listen to music while you ride, that's great. Personal freedoms are awesome. What would be even more awesome is if you would all get together as a group and shut up about it. The "cycling purists" are seemingly making their strongest effort to get up there with vegans and crossfitters... I mean, how will anyone know how you're making a better world for yourself if you don't tell absolutely everyone at every possible opportunity?
</rant>

OP, what comes out of my Pandora is as varied as music, and just depends on the mood of that day. Could be Led Zeppelin, maybe Soul Coughing, might be Deftones or Roni Size Reprazent. The last few weeks, it's been The Upbeats, Netsky, and Rudimental.

I've come upon many hikers and cyclists playing audible music so they don't have to use earbuds. That's incredibly irritating. Please don't do that, either.
No, it depends where you ride and what type of ear buds you're using. On solo rides I have a rural route where for 50km I might encounter less than five cars. And Bose offers ear buds with different levels of sound insulation - I chose the least insulated, ie. the most ambient sound so I can still hear approaching traffice from behind.

When training for a marathon, a long route of 30km, music helps me pace. Might not work for some, but works for me. Again, on rural roads.

On busier urban roads, group rides, any sort of pace lining, no music for me.

Classic Rock on Pandora or an internet station. I wear buds when not in traffic. Hillclimbs I'm dialed in to blues.

When doing intervals The William Tell Overture (in my head) helps me time the sprint and hold cadence. Tried ear buds once on the bike and didn't like them. The wind noise is still in the background. Not good on a bike, but essential on a treadmill or stationary to fight boredom. Most recently John Mellencamp, Billy Joel and Dizzy Gillespie.

Occasionally someone on our casual group rides plays music -- there are some pretty nifty bottle sized speakers that fit their bottle cages. I prefer the rhythmic instrumental stuff -- techno, trance, trip hop. Everyone seems to fall into the same cadence. The sound is mostly thumping rhythm and doesn't overpower the ride leader's voice instructions. Music with vocals can be distracting in those situations.

The only time I listen to music while riding is if I'm on MUP when the traffic on it is light, and then I have only one earbud in. I keep my left ear open so I can hear what's going on around me. So, when I do listen to music while riding, if I have my iPod shuffle, it's mostly a mix of classic rock and some folk music. If I have my radio strapped to my arm, I'm tuned in to either the local classic rock station or ESPN radio.

Motorcycling (where my risks are all in front of me) I listen like classic rock, pop and some classical through sound isolating earbuds. Bicycling (primary risks behind me) - nothing.

I listen exclusively to podcasts with a single Bluetooth Earbud during my daily commute. This way I can still hear what's going on around me.

Personally, I wouldn't wear two earbuds; I've seen too many oblivious joggers using them.

there's a logical argument that music doesn't belong on a bicycle (or on a kayak)
Distraction factor for self
Annoyance factor for others

If you need music on your bike, do you really like to bike?

Jeez always the same old thing, OP ask what music do we listen to when riding and people chime in on reasons to not listen to music while riding.
Some people shouldn't chew gum while walking either.

nothing is more annoying than a getto blaster on a bicycle greenway (except maybe a ghetto blaster on coastal estuary)

nothing is dumber than riding with earbuds

I'm with those who listen to what's playing in their head. Seems to come through well enough that I haven't felt the need to try ear buds. Mostly Grateful Dead/Bob Weir when biking. Some Springsteen comess up as well. Always music I like when I'm riding. Oddly, when I'm playing golf I have no control over the soundtrack and it tends toward 50s and 60s Broadway I heard as a kid or 60s and 70s pop that I never particularly liked in the first place. But riding it's always music I actually like.

I have to admit to being sufficiently low tech that I've never tried tried modern ear buds in any context, so I don't know if I'd like them or find them distracting when riding.

I'm usually listening to the sound of my own breathing........and experience joy that I am still doing it....

My favorite song to have stuck in my head is"Gimme some lovin' " by Stevie Winwood
Or, "Pop that Coochie" by 2 Live Crew (I just like the beat..)

Well jazz guitarist myself once made my living at it but pays less than a bike mechanic, my ears listen to what is around. I want to hear cars if they come, road noise, and strange sounds that might indicate I should check my bike out. Tunes would not work.
