Aspiring racer

Do this in the USA today and you would be arrested, protested by NOW, lose sponsorship's, get blasted by the press and probably the White House.

Tommy Godwin redefines what it means to be a dedicated cyclist. In 1939 he set the world record for most miles ridden in a year by riding 75,065 miles (120,805 kms). In order to do so, he had to average 205 miles every day for the entire year. He rode the equivalent of three times around the Earth’s circumference. To top it off, he did all of his riding on a more than 30-pound Raleigh with a four-speed Sturmey-Archer hub (Raleigh and SA were Godwin’s sponsors). When he finished his record setting year, he spent several weeks re-learning how to walk before heading off to fight in World War II.

Marshall Walter "Major" Taylor (26 November 1878 – 21 June 1932) was an American cyclist who won the world 1 mile (1.6 km) track cycling championship in 1899 after setting numerous world records and overcoming racial discrimination. Taylor was the first African-American athlete to achieve the level of world champion and only the second black man to win a world championship—after Canadian boxer George Dixon.

Knud Enemark Jensen (30 November 1936 – 26 August 1960) was a Danish cyclist who died while participating in the 1960 Summer Olympics in Rome, Italy. He is notable for having been involved in an early doping scandal.

The Olympic 100 km team time trial road race was held in over 100-degree heat on Viale Cristoforo Colombo in Rome. One of the four-man Danish team, Jorgen B. Jorgensen, dropped out of the race due to sunstroke after the first lap, necessitating that all three remaining Danish cyclists finish the race for the team not to be disqualified. Jensen told his teammates that he felt dizzy. Niels Baunsof clutched his jersey, keeping him from falling, while Vagn Bangsborg held Jensen from the other side. Bangsborg sprayed Jensen with water, leading to an apparent improvement, but when Baunsof let go, Jensen collapsed and fractured his skull on the pavement.

Jensen was brought by ambulance to an overheated military tent near the finish line, where he died that afternoon without regaining consciousness. Prince Axel of Denmark, an International Olympic Committee member, was on his way to Jensen's bedside when Jensen died.

Thanks for putting these pictures up. I love to check out how they set up their bikes, gravel grinders take note.

I can only imagine the horror of some of the velominati upon seeing the saddle to bar relationships, the bottle cages, saddle bags, etc. They've got it all wrong, this stuff is undoubtedly cool no matter what the current trends are.

In the day's of harsh riding conditions, unpaved, no caravan of support, you're on your own. That's how it was pretty much! Great thread, I'm tagging it. Thank you, Mike
