We can hope. Given the way these things usually go, 30 months in jail is more likely to be the outcome, unfortunately.

Nothing yet, trial is still months out as of about a month ago.

If you do a search for Charles Pickett, Kalmazoo, MI, you should find updates as they're posted up someplace.

here's the latest I found that way

Yes, and regardless of the specifics of any case, I don't think any reasonable person can object to taking the time to get it right when the stakes are this high.

In the meantime, I believe Pickett is cooling his heels in a cell. Probably "drying out."

Yes, and there's not much practical difference between time served before trial and after conviction. It's not like he's living it up while out on bail.

Not that it would make much difference in this case, but I'm curious about whether the appellate courts uphold the notion that choosing to drive while incapacitated establishes sufficient intent to support a murder charge.

It's not 'speedy'. it's fair and expedited. The trial proceeds in an orderly fashion in accordance with the rights of all involved. It's not a matter of public opinion as to how a trial proceeds.

He should have been sobered up a year ago, assuming he isn't getting black market dope.

Of course there is something to be said about enforcing sobriety, as well as keeping him off of Facebook.

He seemed to be something of a hothead... so keeping him chilled is probably good for all.

Appellate court denies Charles Pickett Jr.'s application on murder charges | MLive.com

KALAMAZOO, MI -- The Michigan Court of Appeals will not hear an appeal of second-degree murder charges against Charles Pickett Jr.

In an order dated Friday, July 28, the Michigan Court of Appeals denied Pickett's application for leave to appeal his second-degree murder charges stemming from the June 2016 crash that killed five bicyclists and injured four.

Pickett's leave to appeal was denied "for failure to persuade the Court of the need for immediate appellate review," Michigan Court of Appeals Chief Clerk Jerome Zimmer wrote.

That makes sense, basically leaving it to the trial judge (for now). Hopefully the case can now proceed.

Thanks for monitoring the news on this and keeping us informed.

Thank you.

Many of us see news regarding such and such event... and often wonder how it was resolved... was there justice or... otherwise.

Thanks for being the on the scene guy in this case.

Here's an example of how Pickett's case should be handled.

"Stripper, former assistant principal, sentenced to 32 years after DUI wreck kills police officer"

Similar sad sack histories of multiple addictions, life in free-fall, enabling behaviors by those around them, trying to blame the victims.

Fatal bike crash trial delayed for appeal to Michigan Supreme Court | MLive.com

KALAMAZOO, MI -- The trial in the June 2016 fatal bicycle crash in Kalamazoo is on hold as Charles Pickett Jr.'s attorneys prepare to take the case to the Michigan Supreme Court.

Pickett's trial was scheduled to start Sept. 18 in Kalamazoo County Circuit Court, but a judge ordered a stay in the proceedings pending the outcome of Pickett's appeal.
