Rehab perhaps? Unfortunately, I know a couple of people who went to jail and their time was based on how long the detox lasted for the most part. Don't know all the details but they went away for a seemingly really long time for their minor crimes. Not manslaughter by any means. Both of my acquaintances were drug and alcohol abusers.
Dude might be a flight/suicide risk as well.

Not that it would make much difference in this case, but I'm curious about whether the appellate courts uphold the notion that choosing to drive while incapacitated establishes sufficient intent to support a murder charge.

It's not 'speedy'. it's fair and expedited. The trial proceeds in an orderly fashion in accordance with the rights of all involved. It's not a matter of public opinion as to how a trial proceeds.

KALAMAZOO, MI -- The Michigan Court of Appeals will not hear an appeal of second-degree murder charges against Charles Pickett Jr.
In an order dated Friday, July 28, the Michigan Court of Appeals denied Pickett's application for leave to appeal his second-degree murder charges stemming from the June 2016 crash that killed five bicyclists and injured four.
Pickett's leave to appeal was denied "for failure to persuade the Court of the need for immediate appellate review," Michigan Court of Appeals Chief Clerk Jerome Zimmer wrote.
