I bought a Bell hydration pack (imitation Camelbak) because I live in flat south Louisiana where a summer ride in high-humidity and typical 105F+ heat index usually equals two water bottles drained in less than 20 miles. I filled it up with ice cubes and then cold water and found that it kept me cooler during the first 10-15 miles. Real problem was my Bell helmet which couldn't vent enough heat to keep my noggin cool. Makes me wonder which is worse - the risk of over-heating/cooking your brain or crashing without a helmet.

I fill my Camelbak with crushed ice that lasts for hours and my back stays cooler than without it.
