As many others have said... most likely culprits are going to be bike fit/position putting too much pressure on the hands, gripping the bars too tight. When I had this problem in the past, it was in due to having too long of a stem causing me to shift too far forward and put too much weight on my hands.
I'd personally recommend having you're Dr. check it out if it persists for more than a day or two, followed up by a good bike fitting at a qualified LBS.

Yah that's true. One doesn't "need" to switch to solve the problem usually, but it would solve the problem. "my butt is numb by the end of the ride" might be a bit more of an issue with a recumbent though... :-D

CHANGE HAND POSITIONS!!!
Sorry, I can't say how long this will last. But, I'l occasionally feel some numbness when riding. The first thing to do is to take the hands off the bars and stretch the fingers a bit, then find a different hand position that doesn't bother you.
You can literally grab standard drop bars 100 different ways. One of my favorite positions is to grab the top of the hoods and lay one's forearms (gently) across the top of the bars. Your fingers may not be on the brakes, but not far away.
I've also grabbed the tops of the bars with my finger webbing.
I do ride on the tops of the bars a fair amount, and really like the flat profile of the newer "aero" bars.
