The price is right at 55 bucks (as long as frame size will work for me), but I can't find much info on this old guy and was hoping someone might have more details.

Is frame cromalloy? Does steering tube look like it's threaded? Anything else I might not like?

That is a basic “mountain” bike with relatively low-end parts. But they worked fine for what they were. I see a lot of the 800-900 series in Seattle, and they will probably run forever.

Dunno about the steel but the headset is indeed threaded. Not a big deal.

Looks ok to me so long as there is nothing expensive needing to be fixed -- like replacing wheels or cranks or something.

It does have a threaded headset and I believe those bikes were straight gauge chrome moli, but I could be wrong.

hard fork, canti brakes, threaded headset -- what's not to like?

Of course the low-quality pics aren't doing it any favors, but this is Trek's lowest model mtb, and it looks to be in rather poor condition. All the black painted components look highly oxidized, rusty steel seatpost, etc.

Meanwhile, $20 extra gets you this, which apart from the crusty tire sidewalls, looks pristine.

I must have skipped past that because it didn't mention brand or size. Looks pretty good though.

6' 2" but with short legs so I am not sure what size to get. Probably just a large frame not XL.

So if you have any good reccommendations let me know.

I'd like to get 26" or 27.5" mountain bike with good steel frame and good rims, 20" or 22" frame. Something under 100 bucks if possible but no huffy or other garbage bike, I already have one of those.

Both the Trek 800 and HR are too small. You need a 21" frame size minimum.

The Henderson Trek 850 is a fair deal, about a 1996 vintage. I have one and it is a bullet proof bike. LV isn't that big, meet the seller in town.

Yeah the Hardrock I linked is probably too small, as is that Trek 930, and that 800 you were interested in initially.

DB is an often overlooked brand. This one has full Deore LX components.

For a CL I will pay the money buy that's so prevalent on here he should go get that bike. Although it's looks a bit scuffed up in a few spots that makes it even more desirable on the CV Valuation Forum as long as it's under $300.

Looks like it is a 2002 with cromoly frame and 36 spoke tires (which are both good things for me). The value in the bluebook puts it a little lower than 80 bucks but the guy is like 2 miles away. So long as I can fit on it and it doesn't have something horribly wrong I think I'll pick it up tomorrow unless something better pops up. From the pics at least it looks in very good shape.

The Fisher is not a bad buy for a CL purchase that you want and needs very little if anything. Tires look new.

Bluebook is not accurate for bike value. They are a company that buys and sell bikes which is using "bluebook" in their name. You can always try negotiating with the seller as it has been listed awhile. Although it could also be sold and the seller didn't delete the ad.

You can get a bike with higher end parts if you have patience, at least where I am, but it could take months or even years of waiting. A big plus for that Wahoo is that it already has more road oriented tires.

Yeah, I don't want to spend all my time on CL waiting for just the right bike to pop up, especially since 2/3 of the bike ads have almost no info and you have to figure it all out yourself. This really has everything I want anyways, and 80 bucks is nothing compared to any new bike options worth a damn.

The bike's front shifter is broken and probably needs new brake pads, but aside from that everything is quite good. Amazing how much better of a ride it gives, the magna ride is somehow both soupy and full of vibration. Sadly it's stuck on the little ring though, so I will have to manually move the chain and possibly take off the front derailer. Not sure of the toothing on the front but it seems awfully small even on the big ring. If I find something cheap maybe I will get a new crank and make it into a 7 speed with a larger front ring.

you might be able to fiddle with the front deraillers limit screws to keep the chain on the middle ring.

Actually here's the exact same crank, but with better toothing. Maybe I could find a double the same size though, and get those shimano shifters above as well.

I can't find anything that looks like limiting screws. I think that the derailer is not whole. Oh boy.

I could not adjust it and looks like I need to take the whole crank off. Not sure what size either, looks like I will have to buy a socket wrench set.

The chainrings looks like the the typical triple found on mountain bikes. I'd just replace or fix the front shifter than ride it. You'll find things to upgrade as you ride it.

If you want to order them both to save on shipping, do what Chris Chicago said and adjust the inside limit screw so you ride in the middle to test it. You may even be able to get to to stay in the large ring by tightening the cable enough.

Include a picture of the top side of the front derailleur.

Ok, the deraileur is definitely broken. I see where the limiting screws are supposed to go, they just aren't there. This guy was not big on wd40 and everything is massively packed in grease so it's hard to see what's going on. I think this derailer is mounted on some kind of chain guard. If I had a longer allen wrench maybe I could get it off.
