Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? any time you take your hands off the bars, you're asking for a gust of wind or transition in the road to knock you over

It's a risk just like riding no-hands: I wouldn't do it in a peloton or on a windy day, but I'm quite comfortable with the risks involved. I only had a problem once, at low speed, in the city - nearly got knocked off when side-wind from an alley surprised me.

Somewhat bike related purchase today. Sperry Top-Sider originals. I've seen them mentioned in a few of the millions of "favorite shoe for clips and straps" threads. I haven't biked with them much but they surprisingly feel much stiffer than my Vans Chukka Lows.

I have never understood why people ride in boat shoes.

I have had the same pair for the last 4-5 years, but I wear mine loose to slip on and off, which seems somewhat counterintuitive for riding in clips.

Can someone shed some light? Do people who ride in boat shoes wear them tight?

I never wear Vans, but I bought a pair once so that I'd have shoes 'just for riding in'

Then I realized how silly that is and just went clipless.

At the time, the way I saw it (and still see it) was that if you're going to have special shoes for cycling, you might as well go clipless.

Lady friend wants me to get some boat shoesiez and/or desert booties but I'm like heck no I'm not gonna ride in either of those shoes and I'm surely not carrying a pair of shoes with me everywhere I go just so I can be stylin'.

I have both boat shoes and DBs. I love them both, but my boat shoes will always be my favorite. It took so long to break them in, but they were godly after that.

Traded in a bunch of things from the parts bin and got a Thompson seat post, FSA Omega compact drops, brake levers, Profile T2 Wing bullhorns and a Toupe saddle.

Going to get my FG dialed in just in time for our 6 month rainy season.

#boatshoes

I can see what you mean about getting regular shoes just for biking not making much sense. I just got these for general use and had heard they weren't bad to bike in which was a plus. I don't have any shoes that fall between black dress shoes and sneakers on the fanciness spectrum and thought these would be a good middle ground for business casual or when I'm on worship team etc.

I ride in topsiders most of the time, but that's just because I spend 90% of my waking time wearing them. Once you have 8+ months on a pair, wearing anything else is just difficult. My current pair is at month 18 (they've been to Austria and back, and of course hundreds of miles on the bike) and the soles are almost worn through completely and the laces are just little stubs from my cat gnawing on them. I have a new pair but I won't be able to stop wearing my old ones until they fall apart (and I've done that to multiple pairs in the past).

I love dem, so so muuuuuch. Yes they also fit very well into toe-clips.

I said fender! Whatever the case, a nice day makes for a better background, and I prefer to ride with my camera on nicer days than nasty weather
