Neat thread and admiring these jewels. Years ago I accumulated a small lot of vintage bells picked from flea markets. They used to be very common and low cost. Though I lost many in college town, the Reich's had a simple thread stud for the cap and thieves would just take the cap and leave the mechanism. I would then just replace by spinning on another bell cap. The record was having one lifted within two minutes while at a quick stop gas station. There's only so much time one wants to spend on locking up a bike, securing lights, etc. but I sometimes would spin off the bell cap and take it with.

Have only a few left, less ornate than the those depicted here. (The one Rudi has, a racer sporting a hairnet is really cool. Excellent detail.)

Yeah, this thread made me start prowling eBay a bit as well. But so far I'm managing to resist.

So I've got a thing for vintage bells. I think every bike should have one. When I'm amongst pedestrians on a path, it's a lot friendlier than yelling out "on your left". Out in the countryside, someone's riding the opposite direction, I give 'em a ring. When I'm riding with one of my friends with a bell, if we're not together, I ring it. If I hear a ring back, all is good.

Bells are cool.

More of my bells (with sounds!) here
That's a good idea, I'm going to get a bell - when I ride with my daughter I have to keep looking behind

I love the aesthetics of the bells posted so far. As a regular MUP user in DC I have bought enough Spurcycle bells for all my regular use bikes. Has the most resonant sound and longest duration of any bell I've heard, which really gives walkers a good judge of your distance and approach, and I like the very minimalist looks. They kind of disappear on the bars.

Same here.

My favorite by far.

In fact, I just gifted two to riding buddies over the holidays.

I've got bells on the mind, so pardon the resurrection. Can't decide between a vintage bell or a new Crane Riten for my UO-8.

Here's what I got. It came on my Hercules (German) folding bike, but I ride the Pug more, so there it sits.

The Herc needs its bell back. Decisions, decisions...

Cool thread. 👍 This one looks pretty plain, but it's heavy & LOUD, with a great sound, and I bought it in an antique store, back in Kingman, AZ. And my Bell headlight is nearly appropriate for this thread, in name at least. 😁😉

Zombie thread resurrection, I've added to my collection since original posting, so I'll add some more pix. Many of us who worked in an LBS know that there are water bottle programs that a shop can buy into. You supply the bike shop graphics, they screen them on bottles, you get shipped a bunch every month during the season for a discounted price. BITD in France there was a bell program, you can find custom bells with the shop name engraved, cast, or painted on. I think this is an invoice for just such a thing (my french is merde):

Small LBS on the Rhine, perhaps?

Unusual one.

You can find bells commemorating special events.

Yeah, what he said. 👍 I especially like that Apollo 11 one, although I'm not sure why it's on a bike bell. 🤔 But slightly weird can be cool, as this is. 😎

Last week I came home to my bike set up in the trainer with a pink Dora the Explorer bell conveniently mounted on the aero bars.

It was a-Dora-bell.

Fun trip down Zombie lane - and such cool bells! Mine are contemporary and matched to needs and steeds. The silver Crane Suzu works with the mono-chrome on my Mk1 build visually. It isn't as sonorous as the brass ones, but I find it to be pleasant enough if I'm on a MUP or rail trail. The patina of brass works nicely with my Sports, where I use a Crane Riten to cut through the ambient noise of NYC streets and bike paths. I have so far avoided putting a bell on my Mercian.

I run crane bells on my bikes but on a French Market Peugeot Mixte (ex pat family moving from Seattle back to La Belle France) I found and built up from my daughter had a very cool Peugeot branded bell that was probably worth as much as I paid for the bike. Here is a not so great picture

Italians must had a similar Buy in program. In Italy, this model of bell is seen a lot. Shop name and city change, but St. Christopher is always along for the ride.
