Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

race

Mass neutral start. No drafting allowed.

35,000 feet of climbing

Time-- depends how many issues you have. On my fixed gear I hurt a bunch and it took me 45 hours. No I did not sleep. 36 hours or less is a very respectable time. Last year's event had a 44% DNF rate.

Race Date------ Total Entrants------ Solo Finishing Rate----- Team Finishing Rate
October 6-8, 2007----- 192 ---------- 44 of 78 = 56.4% ------ 114 of 114 = 100%

that guy's a monster. well anyone doing this ride is a monster, but he'll probably place well.

never met him, but always see his name finishing first or so in our brevets. his latest feat (that i heard about) was 502 miles in 24 hours. wow.
Yes he is a monster!! I remember seeing some 24 hour thing he did in 2007. Very fast and not in my league.

I remember crewing this event back in the 1990s. Sleep was never a problem. Our rider took a 2 hour break at Badwater and I just lay on the ground on the down wind side of a low wall and slept on the sand. The guy wanted to keep riding after getting rained on descending into Stovepipe Wells. We grabbed him and forced him to change into dry clothes some-when after Midnight. He insisted on sausages in Shoshone and lost them on the next climb. Best show was night exercises as we passed the Marine base. Finished in 46 hours and he had only had 2400 miles of casual riding in the last year. I recall that he worked at Brookhaven out on Long Island (NYC).

That 44% DNF rate? Seems kinda low to me. I would think it would be far more riders dropping out. Honestly, 500+ miles and 35K of up just seems impossible. Super human effort that I can't even comprehend. Everyone racing has a support vehicle, yes?

There are definitely some freaks of nature but I don't think it is super human. Here are the historical results. There has been less and more (over 60%) DNF's but it hovers in the 30-40%. Teams fair much better.

This was his meal from Shosone. He rode ahead while we waited forever to get the food. He kept his down on the next climb.

Oh...and proof of my always claim. This is from RAAM last year...

Hi Brandy, George, Chucklehead, and Ticia,

Good luck with the race.

George, are you doing it fixed again?

I've got 4 teammates doing it fixed this year. Greg Page from Eldo is one of them.

Unfortunate timing related to the rest of our club -- we're putting on a cyclocross race this weekend in Costa Mesa.

There will be a webcast through the 508 website with updates. Unfortunately we won't be updating from the road.

Yes I remember sucking his wheel A LOT. Always placed me in the right place for the sprint but I just don't have the fast twitch to stay with him. I didn't know he rode fixed. Four person will be a breeze for them. I expect a sub 30 hour time from them-- easily.
