Awesome. Thanks!

23" is a little bit big, but I normally ride a 56cm square frame, with a Technomic stem because I like fairly high bars, but this bike should fit fine. I am not worried about standover. Just don't want to be too stretched out.

I have a 23" 58CM 1987 Super Sport The top tube is 56CM not 58.
I normally do not ride a 58CM bike as it feels to large but this one having a 56 top tube makes it ok for me.

^ oh man! I love the paint on that bike. The yellow bar tape looks really cool on it too. Without the yellow it just wouldn’t be as wild looking.

Yes indeed. It gives it more of a racing flair. I had a roll of yellow Benotto tape left over from replacing the bar tape on my, now sold, Olmo, and thought it would look great on the Tempo with its unique color scheme. Here's a photo of the Olmo.

Dialing in 87 Schwinn Super Sport

A neighbor of mine is a bike mechanic and he dug through his bins and found 2 ( 25T and 23T)
cogs that fit my freehub without filing! I went on a nice long shakedown ride and realized I need a longer stem. Mine is 80-85mm and I probably need a 100mm stem. Does anyone know what diameter I need? I know that my seatpost diameter is 26.6mm. As you can see in the pic, I have the saddle slammed all the way back.

I agree with previous poster. You scored! When I found mine, most of the original components had been replaced with lesser quality ones. I spent some $ to put upgraded Shimano components back on her.

Beautiful Tempo! And lovely photos with such depth (the black) and clarity. The Tempo's color and graphics scheme is simple yet classy. A great year for it.

Great bike! Your stem has a diameter of 22.2mm. I have an '87 Tempo and I also changed the stem from 80mm to 100mm.

Awesome! thank you. I really enjoy riding that bike. It's got a more comfortable ride than my modern carbon fiber road bike.

My 1986/87 Passage from a number of years ago. Still have it, but with racks and bags and new parts, etc. Still my favorite bike.

Yes, the QUILL diameter is 22.2, but if the bar is a stock Road Champion the CLAMP diameter is 25.4.

A shame it was too little too late for Schwinn. They actually had some nice paint schemes going on. I wonder what their market share was toward the end. They must have done well. Then again hindsight. I'm sure in the moment they had a lot to overcome as far as perception was concerned

I have to say this paint is growing on me. I haven’t had mine out yet. Don’t have the heart to ride it in the rain yet.

Does anyone have a 56-58cm mid to late 80s 27" wheeled frame (or complete) for sale? I have a WTB in the sale section too. I'm thinking '86 Prelude or late 80s Le Tour. I have....plans...

Yeah, I agree. I do try to remind myself that my tempo is a Schwinn in name only. It’s really just a rebranded Panasonic. Even so, it does seem like they got a clue at the end. The bikes are really nice, but they had a ton of competition doing the same thing in the 80s, and the competition probably had a better reputation at that point.

I don’t want to dump too much on the old Chicago Schwinns though. I know everyone wants to buy the bikes that the pros ride, but we aren’t pros. Those old tank Schwinns were probably perfect for a large chunk of the population. I still love the collegiates / suburbans / continentals etc. My wife has a 3speed collegiate and it’s perfect for her.

I have a really nice 1986 Schwinn Prelude 23” (~58cm) that I was going to sell in the Spring. But I could part with it earlier. Has a few nicks and scratches, but clear coat is still shiny! I am in the western suburbs of Chicago.

Gunmetal Grey. All original except for bar tape (crummy termination job), rim strips, tubes, and newer Continental Ultra Sport tires. Also has newer headset lock ring in place of ugly old galvanized reflector bracket. Reflectors, toe clips, and “dork disk” are missing.
